I kinda like that, I feel that the implication is that Kote is exaggerating everything to make himself look better.
Kvothe is literally his wish-fulfilling self-insert into his own story.

Also, I liked the second book initially, but I've grown bitter over it lately. It progressing so little wasn't a problem when I read it initially, but now that it's been so long and Patrick insists on calling this a trilogy...

Yeah, it's not a bad couple of books (I liked The Slow Regard of Silent Things, Auri's side story, the most though) but it's clear the writer's mouth has written checks his writing skills can't cash. I fully expect a disappointing bridge 3rd book into a divisive 4th, eventually (TM).

I wonder if i should stop being such a housemaid and get myself into the Dune books, since i only got as far as the miniseries... Irulan and the way Atreides told her how he felt in the end was of such beauty, though...

Honestly, as far as Dune goes I fully believe reading the first one and none of the rest works just fine.

Partly agreed. The others range from good to very good novels, but the first one stands heads and shoulders above them.

I expect a very good third book I won't care about because it's been too long. It'll then lead to a second trilogy happening in the present. Kvothe's story really ended in a trilogy guys! Have Kote's story now*

Can't get more sprawling than Dragonlance. There's a fuck ton of books in that series, all bundled into three book arcs.

Or Discworld if you want something less serious but much better.

Does it necessarily have to be more than five books? Because I'd recommend the Prydain novels, but they're sitting exactly at five books (there's a sixth one, but it's a collection of short stories which aren't directly related to the main series).

dan simmons - hyperion quadrilogy. granted, only 4 books so not sprawling by that definition, but the books individually are reasonably big

"but hyperion is sci-fi not fantasy!"

read it and then tell me that with a straight face, I dare you

You have an age to burn, try reading the Wheel of Time (13 books in all). More urban fantasy than straight up fantasy, the Dresden Files are pretty great (and no annoying teenager drama). The Night Watch series is pretty good too. Discworld was already mentioned. Back to "classic" fantasy, there's a bunch of D&D tie-in series, such as Dragonlance (a lot of interconnected quadralogies), Legend of Drizzt, Elminster Chronicles, et al.

    - - - Updated - - -

Special mention goes to Tales of the Otori, set in fantasy Feudal-Japan-with-the-numbers-filed-off. Exactly five books including the prequel.

    - - - Updated - - -

Ok, last one, The Dark Tower. Blend of fantasy and horror, written by Stephen King. Shame they never made a movie out of it. NEVER.

Small caveat: the first novel will seem very derivative, and on many levels, it is. I do think it has enough charm to stand on its own, but if you don't like it, I'd suggest reading at least the second one as well.

Unpopular opinions but ive read dark tower and very much am bored most of the times.
Haven't read Dark Tower specifically, but this is basically how I felt with all Stephen King works I've read.
