Easy summary I think:

Pick a side, bash for points, the side with most points win, and when you are done with the whole thing, you get to unlock the other side's story and point farming quest. The points of the winning side will be given to all players as present, and you can pick which side's point it turn into I believe to lessen farming time. So, just bash and have fun, everyone gains.

Historically, both sides are losers since Nobu got killed in Honouji and the Shinsengumi was eradicated in Hokkaido with whatever is left of the Bakumatsu, so it is losers vs losers.

Also, it makes sense the hat doesn't fit noseless lass since she jacked it from Hideyoshi I believe.
