Let's see, recommended characters for beginners might be F-Aoko, F-Arc, F-Warc, H-VSion, H-Roa, H-Nanaya, C-T.Shiki, C-Hisui, C-Ries.

Try them out.

If you're asking what kind of an opponent teaches you a lot about the game, it's probably these same ones. The other characters just have longer blockstrings and more frame traps which is just going to confuse you.

Something that you might appreciate would be what a good spar CPU is, let's see

C-Ryougi - Probably the strongest CPU in the game. Will punish pretty much everything with a babby combo.
H-Roa - Will teach you to cover your holes.
H-PCiel - Will teach you to stop jumping, or rather to do your jumpstuff perfectly or else. Obviously, teaches bad habits.
H-Tohno - Will teach you what it's like to be inferior, and how to play against your opponent's stuff being flat better than yours and beating everything you've got.
Any Nero - Will teach you about throws and exploiting opponent's holes, also teaches bad habits though.

Avoid fighitng CPU though, try fighting each other instead.

Well, by now, she is pretty much a classic fighting game character. Mid tier easily. Heiro (236c) borders on broken.

I think she's not a very good beginner character, though, once you start having an idea what you're actually doing. She has an absolute crapton of gimmicks that end up being actually important, and is very changed from AC. If you start with a Ciel, though, do start with her. H-Ciel teaches terrible habits, and in the immortal words of Spin, F-Ciel gives you a carpal tunel.

By which I mean my terribad launch-then-completely-forget-how-to-aircombo playing managed a pretty okay win ratio against the more experienced Spinach (was it you, Spin? I feel like it was you).

And then he grabbed Roa and my win ratio went to something like -940%.

C Roa is top tier, but also needs insane execution. C-Roa, F-Hime, and C-Arc would generally be agreed to be too good.

I think it was F he wrecked me with. I couldn't get a grip on Roa's combos, they were just too odd.

Of course it helped that I literally haven't played anything but AC, and that particular day was my first foray into AACCLMNOP.
