It's written by Reki and fits between Mother's Rosario and Alicization with some assumptions of "AR gets popular during the montage months leading up to Rosario's climax."

A couple of the remaining Sleeping Knights help out for the end battle and the stinger is a setup for Alicization.

Like, it's not a Big Three anime movie barring The Last or Boruto and fits into actual canon. Even obliquely references Accel World tech.

Still rather unsure about the state of SAO story. So much seems to be being added in Progressive, which has to meld into the rest of sword art online. And Alicization seems to go on forever.

Progressive is a rewrite. I don't think anyone particularly says "this now has to fit with existing canon!" considering it explicitly changed canon.

So where does it end? Will it be a totally different SAO saga and ending to the death game?
Will it end up being a parallel path from the novels which are still going?
Will SAO be a hot mess of different takes on the story like Full Metal Panic?

I ultimately dropped SAO and stopped buying the LNs after Volume 8 because of how painfully dragged out and unfun Alicization became.

Progressive isn't actually a rewrite. I've spoken with the wiki mods who run the the SAO wiki. It occurs after volume 8's segment known as "First Day". There are examples in Alicization that reference occurrences in Progressive such as Kirito recalling acquiring his Queen's Knightsword from the Dark Elf Queen. Aria of a Starless Night is just an adaptation of an original anime story Kawahara wrote for the anime as Episode 2 that fleshes out the story and depicts Asuna leaving the first floor with Kirito instead of him leaving her behind.

This is a rough chronological order that I've managed to put together over the years. I'm trying to scrounge up all the side stories and organize them into PDF's that'll make them more accessible to newer readers.
