So whats the best way to farm the back half? Should I go for the Lalter node and focus on getting merits to hit the lotus only nodes? Or focus on the lotus/merit nodes and put the quests that cost merit on the backburner?

I spent money on the guaranteed 5-star and that's it. I don't trust myself to not get a gambling addiction if I open up the flood gates(wallet).

Ive only spent like 25 bucks. Mostly I just save up quartz from quests and login bonuses.

You're on the right track, at least from what I can tell with my own experience. Just as the first half of the event had an efficient farming method in going for the Talismans and than hitting the mission that required 100 of them for all 3 of the previous currencies, you can do something similarly for the Grand Lotus' and Merit Orbs. However, first a pre-requiste step: First farm the second of those 40AP nodes for Lotus flowers until you get 1200 so you can buy out the 4 copies of the new CE in the event shop.

After you do that, go for the last node of the new 40AP ones that were unlocked; can't remember the name but it is the one with all of the Naga and Lancer Artoria Alter as the Ox King. Fill your CE bar with all of the copies of the new CE (or as many as you can without dropping any for any CEs you might need to clear the node) so that you can maximize your chances of getting extra Merit Orb drops; hope that you get lucky enough early on to get a 5th to drop, or that people in your friend list have stuck the new CE on their Rider/Saber/Berserker you want to use to take out the Nagas/Lancer Artoria Alter. Once you have enough Merit Orbs to do at least one of the 6 challenge quests, go ahead and do them, though you'll want to check the FGO wiki for the enemy list so you know what team to bring, as well as change your CEs to any ones you pulled from the Gacha as they'll boost the number of Lotus Petal drops from the 6 challenge quests. Important note though: The Grand Hero CE (the one with Gudako on it) DOES NOT increase the drop rate of the Lotus Petals, so take it off your supports. Beating each of the first 5 challenge quests nets you a copy of the Ox King CE which you can than start using instead of the Gacha CEs for Lotus Petal drops, as it gives +4 for each one. After that, it's rinse and repeat: Farm Naga/LArtoria node for Merit Orbs, do challenge quests for Lotus Petals. Lastly the 6th challenge quest unlocks once you've completed the previous 5, and you can only clear it once.

Also don't forget that the Shangri-La once daily missions gives Orbs too, and your enemies are still Doors so remember to bring your Riders and your Nightingale CEs for it. :3

The rates themselves keep a lid on my spending lol

On Scathach rate up I got like 4 or 5 golden sparkle, most of them are 4 star. They come out like every 15-30 quartz

Not a dime. And I don't plan to spend any until GO changes something about it's incredibly scummy gacha system.

The game is fun, much as I question some of its choices of Servant material and utterly abhor others, but I'm not gonna support it by giving them my money until they implement a reasonable pity system at the very least. People dumping hundreds of dollars in a gacha game is a horror story scenario already, but people dumping hundreds of dollars without even getting what they want is just inhumane. Like "even casinos would cut you a break sooner than that" inhumane.
