It's not a matter of people being 'good' or not. Translating is work that requires time and effort, which is often taken for granted, especially on the internet in fan communities. One of the ways to put an end to that kind of treatment is translators knowing their own worth and sticking to their guns about being compensated for the work they take up, and for us to see the free translations they do as the huge favor to the community they are.

Personally I also tend to feel that I'd be more willing to freely help out someone that has bought what they're asking to be translated so it isn't just some entitled anon that got it off some site anyone can access, or someone who has demonstrated that they're going to contribute to the community themselves too.
