Wtf are the green names in the first post? Are they for folks standing on the wall too high and mighty to pick a side? Commentary sans actual reccomendation or condemnation? You should note the meaning in the OP next time you update it, for meaning of birth.

Yes, green is basically "I have something to say but no vote". Will put a color code since apparently it's not as self-evident as I assumed. :V

I wonder who was the sick, sick person that wrote Archer raping a poor couch, though... I feel like I have that person name in my tongue, but for some reason, it keeps slipping(sp?) from my reach. *looks thoughtful* Oh well, I'll remember one of this days.

Jokes aside, I can't help but insist in the recomendation of Soul of Heroes. The author has uploaded a new chapter (chapter 17), and so far, it has made a wonderful work at traslating the world of Boletaria into a written story and at inserting the wonder trio there. And the rest of the FSN cast hasn't been forgotten. They keep moving and doing things that affect or will affect the story in the near future.

For those who know Demon Souls, in the last chapter has appeared at last Ed the Blacksmith. For those who only know Dark Souls, in Demon Souls there is only two blacksmiths, and Ed is by far the best in both characterization (a grumpy dwarf/lizard/human thing) and skill. And he is almost as charismatic as Andrei, but in his own way.

IIRC, it was either Fafnir or Elf.

Well, there goes the joke. It was Elf. That's why I said that exact words while quoting her. And then I said, and I quote "Jokes aside".

It has absolutely no relation to relative levels of skill in the slightest, which is obvious since he clearly isn't familiar with either body of work - moreover, it is a confusion over a silly piece that was barely porn at all and more physical comedy which renders your entire premise a bit problematic.

    Title: Nails
    Author: Tacks
    Genre: Drama, Action/Adventure, Mystery, Romance
Summary: Author's FF.net summary: Tohsaka Rin, an ambitious and strong willed young magus of 23, travels to Valencia, Spain, to participate in the Fifth Grail War. There she attempts to summon Saber but instead finds herself in command of...Berserker? For want of a nail...
    Pairing(s): Rin/dude (whose identity is a spoiler)
    Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7509812/1/
Warnings: Questionable changes to canon, some canon characters seem out-of-character

I will say right out the gate that this is an odd rec for me. It's no Chaos Theory, Tainted Ideals, Eureka! or Phantoms, but it is an above average story that actually has an ending. And that alone is a wonder for any fic that hits double digit chapters.

It concerns Rin inexplicably going abroad to fight the Fifth Grail War and teaming up with teenaged Illya to keep the war from getting out of hand or the mysterious Omega weapon falling into the wrong hands. Exactly why everything is so off-kilter is one of the driving questions behind the narrative as Rin scrapes through the Grail War with her amnesiac, mediocre-statted Berserker. Some of the other questions include:

What is the Omega weapon the war overseer has asked Rin to collect?
    Who is Berserker?
    Who is Shane Rowe?
Why is the war not in Japan?
Which canon characters will appear and how have the changes affected all of them?

I'll admit I like this story a lot for the better half of its Servant roster. There are some safe choices in Saber, Assassin and Rider, and the revelation of Berserker wasn't the "wow" moment the author probably intended. That said, the way Tacks uses Rider's Noble Phantasm is very cool, and he hasn't personally appeared in any Fate medium before now. And it's not as if super-popular heroes are a bad thing. Each of the Servants gets to shine. However, Archer, Lancer and Caster are the real stars. There's a badass Native American Archer with some cool powers. The Caster is a clever take on that spirit's legend and magecraft in general, and Lancer gets points for being adapted from a story everyone has heard--though the trick is that it's a story without any combat in it, and Tacks adapts this legend into a viable Servant.

So there is definitely some creativity to be had here, especially in the way Rin outmaneuvers a lot of her opponents and gets them to fight each other, for instance, to make up for the crap-tier Berserker. (Bonus points from me because a lot of Fate stories are just a matter of the hostile Master-Servant combos lining up in a queue to attack Shirou. This actually feels like a war with multiple factions.) Rin is in fine form, and a surprisingly well-adjusted Illya is a surprising treat to behold. Of course, she still has the fangs she hides behind the cutesy veneer.

The downside is that the Omega sub-plot eventually comes to dominate the narrative to a point where the Grail War aspect feels rushed to a conclusion so Tacks can focus on Team Rin vs. the shadowy manipulator, who is actually a canon character acting wildly out of character. Tacks came up with a good Sixth Grail War idea, a decent sci fi plot and meshed the two together in such a way as to bring both down. The Grail War was going strong before Omega hijacked it, and Omega's presentation is marred by the fact that it doesn't fit the Nasuverse at all. So half the canon characters don't read like themselves in order to facilitate Tacks's pet Omega project, and a lot of the rival Masters are relegated to a name and a single character trait because Tacks needs to fill the roster.

In spite of my criticism, I'm still recommending this mostly because I believe Tacks is a competent writer. He flubs some Nasuverse stuff, but the actual mechanics of his writing and his moods are solid. I would like to see Tacks take another stab at the franchise now that he has broken himself into it, but this is a respectable first effort.

But we already knew that Illya is the reincarnation of the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog.

It could be because you reposted that particular omake somewhere else once upon a time; besides, I certainly don't remember if you have written any lemons whatsoever =P

    My first Neutral Recommendation:

    FateEluetheria

    -Official blurb:
Seven months after the events of Fate/Stay Night, Emiya Shirou is visited by a curious man claiming to have discovered the true Holy Grail. Now, as Shirou uncovers the ancient footsteps of King Arthur in pursuit of the Grail, will he finally create his own destiny? (Serves as a direct sequel to Fate route while lampshading most of the FHA stuff for good measure)
    -My summary:
Seemingly yet another "Shirou gets a chance to get Arturia/Altria/Artoria back" fic, Assassin's Creed Style. Not quite what it seems- but not entirely in a good way.

    -Reasoning behind Neutral Recommendation:
This fiction felt like a incoherent pastiche written by multiple authors without either an overarching theme or strong centralized plot, was loaded with inane and not-so-funny-humor, filled to the brim with (barely that, even) 2 dimensional characterization.

Despite that, it was actually deeper than I thought. No, it was not a philosophical treatise by any stretch of the imagination, but it was deeper than I expected.

I don't recommend it for everyone. I don't recommend it for 'the sophisticated', and I especially don't recommend it for (most) BLers.

It was... not an unpleasant read for me. Perhaps some others will enjoy it as well.

    EDIT: See below.

    tl;dr

Not a great story. Probably not even a good story. Philosophically interesting, if very different from usual BL philosophical angsting.
