It's okay if you're trying to level a CA to give them long range to make sure they can get an attack in and hopefully get MVP. Otherwise I can't think of any use for them.
Bring along a low level sub or Maruyu if you're sparkling at 1-1. It won't totally avoid damage, but it reduces the chances of taking damage.

Fair enough. I managed to get AP on the node with about 100 air power on medium difficulty. I'm not sure how much the AP requirement goes up on hard though.
AS on the air combat node isn't worthwhile in my opinion. Better to bring bombers to make the other nodes easier.

Just Fubuki and Maya unfortunately, the quest gives the Type 91 AAFD, which you can spend a tremendous number of screws to upgrade to a baseline Type 94.
The Tone class also take significantly longer to get, so the Mogami class tend to be your main CAVs for a while. There's not much point in making a comparison when they're the only immediate option.
