Well although I haven't played HF in a while I think it's the sword that's doing it, Rin's just activating it isn't she? Or was there something you thought of that made you think otherwise?

Nope, he inherits all the skills of the original wielder. So if he projected a planetary size sword he'd inherit those skills too.
If he could inherit skills so easily and flawlessly, then he'd be a lot stronger than he actually is.
He could use Zerker's axe-sword.
He obviously inherits it easily, but presumably loses it when the weapon breaks
