Maybe i'm missing something but is it that much worse than telling them to watch Japanese cartoons?
Seriously though they went with UBW partially because it played off of Zero's themes and because Zero got the majority of the exposition out of the way. So it sorta assumes you watched Zero.

I know they're into certain types of anime, specifically old classics or psychological, meaningful stuff. They're not gonna take the time to set up and play a vn, I guess it wouldn't hurt to recommend it though.

They are not that hard to please. They're current for the most part and still enjoy stuff like DBZ, Naruto, or whatever.
