It's just another experiment to reach the Root. That's all. Araya traced back souls through origins, Touko tried to find the original body, but neither of them really cared about the original whatever itself, it was all just a means to an end.
Actually I don't know about that last one. I mean, if you think about it, the only one who could do that is tohno shiki. I mean, has probably eaten one a few times.

Do you actually have to be "distorted" as I see in a lot of fics to use them, or is that fanon? Because I can't find much supporting it other than that line about "the alien common sense of demons" which I'm not sure how to interpret. I mean, Satsuki has one!
No, a magus being 'really crazy' or not isn't relevant to them having a Reality Marble. Reality Marbles (except Ionian Hetaroi*) are created by magi through time and effort. In Shirou's case the special circumstances surrounding Archer let him bypass the process and use UBW.
*: Which is a special case since it only exists as a Noble Phantasm.

Thanks, so reading through CM3 it states that in exchange for having both Element and Origin be "Sword" and not being able to use magecraft of the standard five elements Shirou can manifest Unlimited Blade Works.
Does this mean anyone else with the same Origin/Element combo would have Unlimited Blade Works?

Nah, I doubt it. They're still different people. Think about how Shirou and Archer's UBW are starkly different from each other just from their difference in worldview despite being the exact same person.
Eh, not even that really. It is because Shirou's circuits are tailored for the specific purpose of materializing UBW. It was something Shirou simply had and never had to 'make' one like other magi.
He just he did not have the skills or experience to actually materialize it, which where then given to him by Archer due to that memory bleed over thing.
