Actually, if you wanna try and apply technicality to that thing, if you count the number of jeweled shots she throws at Caster in other scenes, it makes it unlikely that that scene in specific is her using a jewel. I'd be more inclined to say the near hits Caster gets on her she defends with actually casted spells from her Crest or something.

There are spells inside the jewels. She could be using defense spells. Anyway, using them to defend uses up less energy then attacking. According to Rin (during that scene in the game) 1 jewel can block 3 or 4 times or so.
