I think the distinction might be similar to the difference between "what's inside of a hole", and "what's outside the universe". Metaphorically. Or emptiness and nothingness. I dunno, it's probably something drawn from a metaphysical system I know nothing about.
Thing I noticed: the two imaginary elements laid out in CM3 are 虚 and 無. Smoosh them together and you get 虚無, Ryougi's origin.
Isn't Ryougi's origin normally written as " " or _ or however you want to show that you are leaving a space intentionally blank and that still isn't blank/not there/absent enough to truly represent her origin?

Akasha is the record of everything/where everything came from.
He is referring to the part of fuyuki which mentions that in Greek cosmology Aether performs the function of Akasha
Edit: it seems in classic Hindu philosophy Akasha is used in place of Aether
Basically they are both elements that make up everything in the universe

I think they do that for the Root, to indicate that the very act of putting a name to it must inherently refer to something else. But Ryougi has a definite origin. Nothingness/Nihility/othertranslationhere.
That's not her Origin. I think it was either Araya or Touko that actually called out Ryougi's Origin as "nothingness".
Also, " " is pronouced as "Kara", as in "Kara no Kyoukai". "Kara(空)" is also the name for Ether in the Association's Seven Elements classification.
