I thought I read somewhere that Anastasia's ice was the Romanov family magecraft, but looking through her mats I only see it talking about Viy being the family's familiar (which I also knew). Is there anything actually saying that about Anastasia's ice or did I mix up fanon with canon?
IIRC pretty much everything she can do offensively stems from Viy. By Nastya's generation, the Romanovs had already long forgotten their mage roots.
the romanovs extensively intermarried with other european ruling dynasties, so should their having 'mage roots' be taken to imply the implicit implications implied by this
also why didn't it help her when she got shot and killed lol

かん汗ぎゅう牛じゅう充とう棟
Expresses the exceeding size of one's library.
Books are extremely many, loaded on an oxcart the ox will sweat.
At home piled to the ridgepole of the house, from this meaning.
Read out as 「Ushi ni ase shi, munagi ni mitsu.」

She only made the contract with Viy on her deathbed, iirc she was never able to see it before then.
so why didn't it help whoever the romanov that has it when they got killed

did the soviets have anti-mage, anti-mystery weaponry
Ok, I know that I'm probably shooting the sky trying to hit the mmon here, but maybe Viy prevented only Anastasia's death because she was by all means the last member of dynasty(of the main ruling family at least)? Like, in order to continue existing Viy needed a living contractor from the dynasty, that's why he chose the youngest one? Viy didn't save any other members of family before Nicholas II because there was no need for it, since they had ligitarmate descendants? Sounds vague, but it's the only reason I can think of now.
Or maybe it was Rasputin. Simple as that.
Also, those weren't anti-mage or anti-mystery weapons I believe. They just. Shot. SALT.

The answer is this:
Because they forgot they mage roots, no Romanovs was able to see and formed a contract with Viy for a long time, only Anastasia right before her death was able to. Viy didn't prevent her murder or save her in any way. Anastasia was able to see Viy right before she died, what was enough to formed a contract that carry on when she become a HS. I think it was mentioned as well that the LBs circumtances are what allow her to use Viy's power as a HS, otherwise normal PHH Anastasia still wouldn't be able to call upon Viy when summoned
Yeah, Viy only contracted her AFTER the bullet hit.
wow how useful
Still upset Anastasia doesn't have a second NP born from the rumors she survived.
I'd guess it just became inert like it was before he summoned Saber.
They say that a road to hell is pathed with good intentions...
Next 10 seconds be like: "Ok, the contract is settled, she'll stay in this word for another minute I gue- Wow wow dudes, what are you coming here with your bayonets for, not coo- WOOOAH!"
Communism was a mistake.
