I don't actually see that in the telling of Lancer's story up on the tlwiki. Anyway, it sounds like a reference to the Aided Con Chulainn version of his death in which three poets in turn ask for his spear, lest they make fun of him/Ulster/all Cú Chulainn's tribe.
So the story goes, in every case he ends up just throwing it at them and killing them. Each time Lugaid picks it up, throws it back and kills a 'king' with it: the first time, the supposed king of charioteers who drives Cú Chulainn; the second, the supposed king of horses who pulls the chariot; the third time he finally kills Cú.
