Thread: [FGO JP main chapter] OC4: Trinity Metatronius, Courtroom for the Judgment of Mankind

  1. #1981
Since the sixth circle, the one meant to punish heresy, is empty in this Singularity, you decide to just get through to the next one as quickly as possible.
I get why the first circle is empty, but why is the sixth one empty?

Same reason as the first, paganism is not a sin by Metatron's standards.

I haven't had the time to check all the summaries, so does anyone know what kind of angel the angel mobs we fight are? Are they the magecraft angels made manifest? Terminals created by Metatron's power? Something else?

That reminds me: what exactly does give Metatron the right to decide what is and is not a sin? Seeing that God is currently unavailable for comment, it looks an awful lot like a simple matter of "might makes right".

Seeing that God is currently unavailable for comment, she follows the logic of "God's will must be the same as mine always". An opinion ridiculous enough to make Prosecutor Kotomine side with the defense against the judge, because correcting someone being wrong about God is more important than the trial.

You can't really get any more "right to decide" what counts as a sin or not than literally being the "executor of God's will" when God isn't personally around, to be honest.

Depending on who you ask, every time someone heard the voice of God, it was Metatron speaking on his behalf

Um... Is there an error in MetaJeanne's second sprite? There's some red bird on the art, but sprite has it hidden behind MetaJeanne. Or am I missing something?
Crazy game theories and nothing else.

Story Summary - Chapter 18: To The Depths of Hell

    --- Section 1 ---

The eighth circle is originally a valley in which sinners with multiple sins would gather. From the lowest level of the ninth circle, the icy winds blow incessantly as demons torment and make mockery of the sinners. This is the hell that it was. But despite it being one of the last circles, it has no warden. In this place there are not only sinners, but many Servants summoned by the Singularity. Thus, this circle has devolved into a battlefield between angels alongside demons vs Servants.

You figure the only way to get to the ninth circle would be to fight your way through the battlefield, but Dante says that would amount to suicide. Originally, this place had 10 great ditches, meant to punish their own individual sin, but the carnage here is so great that these ditches have litereally been filled in with corpses and whatnot. Trying to engage with the battlefield at all here will just trigger more bloodthirsty Servants to attack you. Instead, Dante and Moriarty suggest negotiating with the other side.

As it turns out, the leader of the other side is Chiron (in Inferno, Chiron is found as a guardian in the seventh circle of hell). He and his troops are low on morale, since reinforcements from angels haven't arrived yet, and they're getting slaughtered left and right by other Servants. Moriarty arrives, and jumps straight to negotiations. He explains you want to pass through to the ninth circle, and to do so, you will need to borrow the only dragon capable of carrying you there: Geryon. Since that's a rather one-sided trade, Chiron asks for a request to be fulfilled first, one that has to do with the angels.

When Moriarty returns to your group, he has brought Chiron along to fill you in on what he wants. While the angels that support them here are sixth through fourth order ones, they've been mostly useless. It appears there's some kind of bug in their "programming", making them awful in battle. Your job is to figure out how to fix that. And so, you're sent to where some angels are waiting, and you can instruct and diagnose them. It doesn't take long until you realize that any combat orders are met with absolute idiocy.

Jeanne explains that the angels construct a local network amongst themselves, and that information flows from the first-order ones and downwards. Thus, there should be some angel around here that acts as a "relay" for lower order ones, and you just have to find it and "reboot" it to maybe reconstruct the information being sent. This can apparently be done by using Jeanne's NP at low output. In the meantime, Moriarty and Dante ask Chiron when these specific angels got here, and it seems there's one clear conclusion to draw from all this: the errors are being caused by your presence here.

The issue here is that once the transmitting angel is rebooted, and combat orders work again, the angels will just target you guys first. Thus, Moriarty suggests something even better than just going into hiding: dying. It wouldn't work well against something that would actually try to make sure you were dead if they say you, but the angels won't do that. If they see you as being "dead", then that's it. For now, you'll prepare for this by hunting some demonic beasts, to fashion "stand-ins".

    --- Section 2 ---

[Battle against <Manticore & 2x Sinful Boar & 3x Grey Wolf>] (Habetrot cannot be used)

Having hunted some demonic animals, Kadoc gets to work with fashioning your corpse decoys. Once that's done, Jeanne uses her NP at low output, and manages to highlight the "relay" angel among the rest, allowing Moriarty to swoop in and do some tinkering to "reboot" it. As expected, the rest of the angels now succesfully begin combat operations, and are targeting you. Now's the time for you to die.

    --- Section 3 ---

[Battle against <Angel (4th order) & Angel (5th order) & Angel (6th order)>] (Habetrot cannot be used, Mashu must be frontline. If you defeat all the enemies, you lose. Battle ends when Mashu is defeated.)

With your "deaths", the angels consider their targets eliminated, and they withdraw from the area. You should be safe for the time being, and the request is completed. Moriarty goes to report back to Chiron, while you set up the Bounded Field to rest. Tomorrow's finally the time for the lowest level of Hell, the ninth circle, where a Jeanne d'Arc presumably different from the one you met in the First Singularity awaits you.

Mashu is having trouble falling asleep, so Habetrot takes the opportunity to speak with her. She'd noticed the shield had rusted even more during the last fight. Mashu tells Habetrot of the same conjecture she had about this back during that time. If she's being rejected by her shield, then she would have to fight without it, which is possible, but could possibly prove devastating in the long run. In that case, Mashu feels like she only has one option: to go back. To go back to how she used to view things, when all beings and all outcomes were of equal worth. But she knows that's an impossibility. And still she clings to this hope, because it's the only option she sees.

Habetrot urges Mashu to drops this line of thought, because it'll only get her down. And besides, she says that it's possible to remain righteous even without being "good". She tells Mashu not to worry about the rust and just use her shield as always. After all, she's Mashu Kyrielight first, and a Shielder second. As long as Mashu is here, she'll be able to protect Guda and Chaldea. Just as long as she starts thinking about what she wants to do, rather than what she can do. There must be a different answer than what Mashu sees, one that doesn't align with the fairness and purity her shield demands. But if such an answer exists, it must be locked away in Mashu's heart.

Next morning, Moriarty calls Geryon, a talking dragon who recognizes Dante from his previous travels, and you all get on to fly to the next circle. Unfortunately, you'll have to fly low over the battlefield because of the angels shooting you down otherwise, so you'll have to be ready to protect against attacks from the Servants fighting there. And sure enough, it doesn't take long before you're being bombarded by ranged attacks from Archer-class Servants. To protect from them, you deploy the barrier from the Grail Dagger again, but it's quickly pierced by a Noble Phantasm fired by Robin Hood, who's being ordered by Alexander to shoot down the dragon. Robin Hood prepares to fire another arrow, and since this should be the last thing you need to avoid to make it to the ninth circle, you have Mashu just tank it with her shield. However, things don't go as planned. The arrow strikes her shield, which goes flying and lands on Moriarty, while Mashu almost falls off your ride. You help her up, but she seems to have great difficulty lifting her shield again, as it flashes with rust. Nevertheless, you're clear of the eight circle.

Once you're out of sight, we see Robin Hood ponder the fact that he barely put any effort into that last shot. If that little girl couldn't even block such a weak arrow, she must be in a really bad state.

I'm pretty sure Metatron was originally meant to be a mere scribe.

The origins of Metatron comes mostly from Pseudepigrapha, where Metatron is consistently depicted as the "second power in heaven". The idea of Metatron as a scribe was an attempt by later Rabbinic interpreters to downplay this highly heretical idea that Metatron had been birthed from.

And regardless of how they're described in real-life records, this FGO chapter mentions time and time again that Metatron is the executor of God's will and His proxy. And that definitely takes priority.

Fair enough. But even a proxy must take pains to ensure that it knows the will of its master instead of simply assuming that whatever it wants is the same as whatever God wants.

There's a reason Johanna isn't upset when Metatron kills her.

Not sure if it was brought up in the summaries yet, but do we know why exactly the shield is rusting? If it was a mindset thing, why didn't it take effect during the Lostbelts? Why did it wait until now to kick in- is that Galahad's doing or something else?

Is that also why it was never an issue with Mash before, despite her "purity" being clearly shaken long before this?

It was an issue in LB1 until da Vinci built the Ortinax.

    …Sinners in Hell suffer punishment.
However, some with extraordinary…power, ability and desire try to escape their punishment.
…They are no longer sinners. …They are called
    Haya Ra'a
    Irrational Evils

…They are wicked enemies who did not exist within my “Divine Comedy”...!
