Okay.

OK, I've done a draft profile. It's nowhere hear finished yet, but it covers the basic idea....
Name: ?
Story: Went to Cambridge University at 17 to study Maths, Graduated with 1st class BA age 20, distinction in Part III Maths age 21, PhD age 24 specialising in Theoretical Physics (Relativity/Cosmology), made important discovery. Postdoc in US, was successful, but disillusioned about US government. Friend's child fell ill, insurance company refused to pay bill, made audacious theft of valuables from something related to company. Found it enjoyable and exciting.
Description/Faceclaim:
Personality: Anarchistic in nature, but also generally quite lazy. Can be very driven if he has a goal. Utter contempt for private property in general, although he makes exceptions for things of genuine importance to the owner. Arrogant and sometimes selfish, but also has strong morals and will not harm innocents, or allow them to come to harm.
Magecraft: Mental manipulation and mind-reading. Leads to super-analysis skills (so he can spot the flaws in any plan or program). Some level of mental manipulation possible even against magi, depending on their level of awareness, mental strength, magical ability, willpower and the nature of the order given.
Can read and alter people's memories and information stored in their mind, and can even place ideas into their mind as to how they should act. However, whether they act on these ideas will depend on whether the idea fits with their nature and goals. If the idea is something that they would never normally consider doing, then they will not go along with it. Again, how well it works depends on their mental strength.
Whilst magi are not immune to the effects, their nature as magi gives them some inate resistance to magical spells, and thus the effectiveness is lower. Further, if they are aware of the spell, they can flush the user's prana out of their system and end the effects, although this will not necessarily restore any altered memories.
Nice!
Glad that the mental powers thing worked out.

Yeah, I'm still not 100% sure how to balance it, though. And, obviously, the story and the name needs some work....
I think if you just expand on the events behind how he discovered this mind-altering thing it would be good. Names aren't the hardest things to think of.

Clive Renton.
Done.
A terribly novel concept that I'm sure nobody has never come up with before.Leads to super-analysis skills (so he can spot the flaws in any plan or program).
Sorry dude, really? I'm okay with overlap, but you're going to go and have the exact same ability? Plus, you already have the mental manipulation, that's totally unrelated.
Isn't that called overlap, then?
Some of his abilities are the same as some of your abilities.

That's not the "exact same ability". Yours is analysis of physical things, mine is mental. So, I can't (for instance) build perfect equipment like you can. The only overlap there is in the ability to write computer programs. And, they are related because they're both mental powers. It's just applying the mental abilities to himself rather than to others....
Overlap would be sharing some of the same functions. This is, to be blunt, a rip off of my ability, which also has nothing to do with his magecraft, leading me to wonder why he has it.
^ I fail to see the logical chain in mind-reading to coding. Plus, seriously, come up with your own.
How is it a "rip-off" of your ability? It's totally different....
My abilities concern manipulating the mind generally, not just "mind-reading".^ I fail to see the logical chain in mind-reading to coding.
I did.Plus, seriously, come up with your own.
Also:
Leads to super-analysis skills (so he can spot the flaws in any plan or program).Yep.Analysis and construction.... analyze all flaws and structural characteristics.... applied it to computer software, making her able of writing programs with no weak points and breaking into any system.
Remember kids, mind manipulation means you can write good software. My abilities concern manipulating the mind generally, not just "mind-reading".
Yeah, nice try. That's in reference to producing overlap as an end result. Mundane good at coding? That make sense. Having analysis of coding that happens to do exactly the same thing I do? That's just a ripoff. Also:
The idea is totally fucking different. I explicitly asked you if your "analysis" worked mentally, and you said it did not. Mine, on the other hand, does. And, given that you suggested projection as an option, which involves analysis as a step, I don't see how you can possibly claim that my idea is the same as yours.
And, the "analysis of coding" is a small part of the ability. It's a more general ability to analyse plans etc. to find weaknesses in them, which naturally leads to analysing code for weaknesses (far more naturally than your ability does, in fact...).
I fail to see how it's possible to mind control/manipulate yourself to become a better programmer/thinker. Making yourself think you're a better programmer won't make you any better, life can be cruel like that.
Except for the part where it obtains half the same result with the same methods.
What that means: no, I cannot analyze minds. If you're saying that you have analysis that can analyze minds, and is by the nature of being analysys going to have similar abilities to mine, that only worsens your case with ripping mine off.I explicitly asked you if your "analysis" worked mentally, and you said it did not.
Because projection uses slightly different means to achieve an entirely different result. This is the same means to the same result. And, given that you suggested projection as an option, which involves analysis as a step, I don't see how you can possibly claim that my idea is the same as yours.
It is not overlap... you are going to the point of just making his ability redundant.
