    Beast's Lair Fanfiction Author Guide

Doing it since I posed it.

Talk about BL fic authors. Tell us what you like, dislike, what their strengths and quirks are. That way a newbie might have a guide on what they ought to try and/or avoid.

Be specific. Also, polite. Encourage other BL members to make comments on your work if you're a writer.

I'll update these first few pages with comments on the authors, as well as additional authors as they crop up.

    Elf

Chaple: Writes an awesome Archer. Seems to to love vampires. More average output speed, great quality. Characters feel more human than I normally see.

Radiantbeam: Queen of porn. Also very Archer-centric, and one of the reasons I fell in love with him as a character. Only real complaint is some minor spelling errors, but those are pretty easy to fix otherwise.

Five_X: She seems to have a fixation on having her female characters fold their arms under their breasts.

Tobias: I think elf is a great writer over all, but her and I disagreeing on so many things makes reading her work similar to trying to enjoy a style of music you like live because the singer is famous.

ItsaRandomUsername: Famous/Infamous(?) for writing lengthy, often novel-sized stories that focus on the various adventures that Archer has, often dealing with Hollow Ataraxia styled alternate universes where the Servants of the 5th War are still alive and well. Note that these are usually written for the express purpose of writing Archer-centric porn stories since Elf is a firm believer of Plot With Porn...not that we usually have a problem with this. Because of this tendency with her writing, Elf is endearingly known as the Mistress of Porn.

    Techlology: It's like reading porn.

Spinach: Dialogue is always great in Elf's stories, character development almost always feels spot on but sometimes I'm like "wut", lemons oh god the lemons. I find fights written by Elf boring.

Moczo: The porn has already been brought up gleefully, so I won't go into that. Instead, I'll hit on Her Elfishness's fantastic skill with making characters just plain fun. Both her original works and her fanfiction feature casts that seem to be filled with people who would be fun to hang out with, when they weren't out killing vampires at least. She makes her characters very human, believable, and above all likable, and that's a rare gift.

Flere821: Arguably one of the best writers on BL. Focuses more on emotion rather than fight scenes. The title of 'Mistress of Porn' is well-deserved. Rank: A

Kieran: The grand dame of Beast's Lair fan fiction, and its most skilled writer of lemons and badass characterisations. One of the most prolific (but hardly only) Rin/Archer shippers, though she can be talked into writing almost anything that involves Archer, period. Very friendly and approachable as a mentor to beginning writers, for those who are hesitant as to how well they write.

RanmaBushiko: I'm a reading addict, and her new chapters are like a moth to a flame for me. Her characterization of Archer and the like is pretty much exactly how I think I'd see it going, but I'm nowhere near good enough to write it out like she can.

Keyne: Her stories are awesome from the first to the last word and keep the reader anticipating the next part. She has a good grasp of the characters she uses and writes very illustrative descriptions. You can actually see the plot like a film inside your head and I appreciate that greatly in a work of fiction.

Arch-Magos Winter: Mistress of Porn. One of the best, if not the best author on the site. Mainly writes Archer focused stuff, really really good Archer focused stuff.

hatori: Self-Styled, and hailed as the Mistress of Porn. She does a mean lemon that'll make even the most hardened of readers pucker and HNNGNGH.. That said, her biggest strength is writing Rin/Archer pairings, although she has also branched out with various other pairings with the white haired emo who only wants to kill himself. Not to mention, her Law Unto Herself series is a must read as well, with Forest kicking ass and taking names.

lhklan: If I want to see an Archer pairing, I'll look for Elf. Actually, if I want any story about Archer or Lancer, I'll just look for her.

    Pata Hikari

Kyokushi: His (or her, I don't know) stories can sometimes be confusing but they're beautifully written and almost like poetry.

Alulim: One of the precious few authors that write Tsukihime. He/she does the series the justice that it deserves

deviatesfish: Pata Hikari takes you on a wild ride; you don't know where you are going and you can't bring yourself to care all that much because the present--the journey--is just that awesome. But then you arrive at the ending and you are shocked: the ending is even better than the journey there. It's a pity that Pata Hikari doesn't write more.

    Radiantbeam

Radiantbeam: I write lots of yuri, and one of my OTPs for the FSN fandom involves incest. So if either of those things bother you, please be sure to check my story tags before reading, I usually make note of pairings and such in the title.

Chaple: I've only read the one fic. Herpderp. It was really good though.

Guy: I find Beam writing very emotional, one of the few authors who can move me.

Hymn of Ragnarok: Beam makes me go d'awwwwww. WAFF incarnate. When she's trying to be sweet, it works. And when she goes darker, like her HF Normal End fic? It's good. I love stories that earn their happy ending. Also, yuri. When Beam writers it, it almost always works. And I say almost because I might have not been entertained by one of her yuri fics. Maybe.

ItsaRandomUsername: An inherently kind, laidback type of person. The girl knows emotion and writes it well, often dealing with romance but not afraid to turn from fluffy and happy to sad and melancholic as her work needs. Notable for her predilicetion for romantic, yuri couplings, especially Rin Tohsaka x Sakura Matou.

Techlology: Great variety. Her fics are easy on the eye and can be filled to burst with WAFF. Writes smooth lesbian incest.

Spinach: Beam makes me feel fluffy, happy feelings.

Moczo: Best fanwriter I've ever seen at capturing subtle emotion, hands down. She is a girl who can say in a sentence what most authors need a page to get across, and has the distinction of writing the only fanfic that has ever made me cry. Also, funnier than she thinks she is. And just a generally fun person, and a dear friend. If I had one critique? Girl has yuri on the brain. Even when a story isn't supposed to be yuri when she starts, it ends up yuri as she writes it. She can't help herself. ...This is not actually bad, really, and doesn't impact the quality of her writing, I just like to tease her for it.

Alulim: Wonderful author. Her stories are good enough that my dislike for yuri became irrelevant when faced with them.

Elf: She handles romantic situations between other girls very well. Which is a rather hard thing to do. She also does angst and WAFF pretty well. My one thing I would say she needs is to get a bit more "bite" in her work. There needs to be a . . . meanness in writing, and I'm not just talking angst. I'd suggest getting out of her comfort zone and writing something involving anger or something, which she can in turn bring into her normal stories. I like her stuff, that's why I'm giving such the long comment.

Flere821: Rank A(+). IMO, in terms of the what (eg plot, characters) she writes she generally surpasses Elf (outside of drama or serious fics), though Elf has the how (grammar, punctuation) of the writing better grasped.

Kieran: A romantic, which is something we always need more of.

Keyne: An excellent mixture of crack, fluff and sol fiction. I always like a good laugh and her stories are very laughter-inducing.

Lycodrake: As an author, probably one of the best I’ve seen when it comes to WAFF, especially in usually morose story settings, while keeping it believable and making it fun. I enjoy reading her works and the discussions that come along with them, too. She’s also one of the reasons I enjoy Irisviel and Saber(Arturia) moments, because she’s able to write it so well and in character, while putting the bittersweet aspect of canon to the side, or at least on hold.

The Sylentnight: loves to Yuri writing but can do very emotional pieces. She's great with fluff and reading will put some sort of emotion in you while it be happy or sad.

NamesAreHardToComeUpWith: Makes great fluff. Is also not afraid of making darker stories, like MoS Rin. Versatility coupled with quality is a great thing, and so is Beamu's writing.

Suncofold: I LOVE YOU. Okay, moving on to more serious things. The thing I like about Beam is that she's not afraid to write crack and is also great at writing deep yuri goodness. That may be my teenage hormones talking. I really like how Beam can make a yuri romance work, and how diverse she can be when the plot bunnies attack en masse.

Arch-Magos Winter: Mistress of Fluff. Has more Yuri in her head than a parallel universe filled with Eastern European phone books. Which are from a parallel universe where everyone is named Yuri. I love her anyway. Needs more of the Ayaka/Shirou snippets to be written, but otherwise, I love her. Great at fluff.

hatori: Fluffy, sexy, hilarious and cute, all mixed into one package. what can i say.

lhklan: Might as well name her FlufflyLady. Nuff said.

    Kieran

Kieran: The Lair's greatest egomaniac, holder of the self-assigned title "Lord of Self-Insertion." He has no compunction about torturing Type-Moon characters for the sake of storytelling, and often makes errors regarding established Type-Moon lore, since he's never actually played the games. Also completely insane. But if you're into that sort of thing . . .

Chaple: He has an impressive output speed and genuinely entertaining content. Threads tend to be long as hell though. Easy to talk to and will explain his reasoning to fans.

LeopardBear: Has a marked tendency to use OCs. He's also the only person who I've seen who does it really well, but he does. Make your own judgement.

ItsaRandomUsername: If you can get past his thing for OCs and certain Self-Inserts, his writing is actually a pretty great way to pass the time and enjoy yourself. Warning: Much of his work is intertwined with itself, so it pays to pay attention/read past projects he wrote.

Techlology: His use of OCs is off-set by his ability to give all the characters equal attention to the point where they stop feeling like OCs. Has great balance between dialogue and action. Writes amazing villains and can spin a tale like no other.

Spinach: I feel like Kieran succeeds in all fields, and excels in none. My only complaint is that he has sooooo much work that it's hard to get into it, because it feels like a lot of them are connected, and you need to read a previous story to understand any that came after them.

Kyokushi: A great writer, no questions act. His stories are great and his character development is amazing. His Legacies of Fate fanfic is the main reason I even bothered to join Beast's Lair

Bloble: One of the few SI writer's I can read without hating. He knows his characters, and isn't afraid to use different portrayals of canon characters to shock people. He also churns out an absurd amount of text in an incredibly short amount of time. His stories are easily novel length.

Alulim: While the content may be questionable at times (what with the all the Self Inserts and OC's he shoves in), he is fast (so much so that it is almost ridiculous) and consistent. And really, what more can you ask for?

Flere821: I've only read 2-3 of his fics (Trinity Prologue, ZnT crossover and FFX crossover). Best Self-Insert writer I've ever came across, and have a good grasp on canon NasuVerse characters. The FFX one is also a good read. Focuses on (eventual) action/drama, with a side dish of good humour. Rank: B(-) (minus modifier for using SIs, does not apply if you don't care about SI-fics)

RanmaBushiko: I utterly abhor the Harry Potter series. To make me actually interested in reading new chapters in his Trinity series? Enough said right there. His self inserts surpasses most of the work done by Carrotglace, now known as ContraBardus, who could've been called the most realistic self inserts to date. And his Tsukihime stuff is great.

Elf: Ah, Kirean's was one of the first FFs I've read on the Lair. His and Mereo's. Normally SI's are . . . well, they're Sues and Stues. However Jester/Galen etc is so realistically done with his physical problems as well as his rather messed up mindset that it makes him a pleasure to read. (In fact, if pressed, I'd say that Jester/Galen is a better realized creation than his other main original character, even though she's pretty neat too.) Does Grimdark very, very well. And is getting better at romance.

alguLoD: An excellent writer. He's good with the technical aspects of writing and updates at an extremely rapid pace unmatched by most any other author. He might not have the best understanding of the Nasuverse's mechanics, but the superb quality of his storytelling more than makes up for it.

The Sylentnight: makes some great Self Insert stories and I like how they don't detract too much from the plot or shelve off any of the main characters.

Suncofold: Great writer, I find his works to be extremely engaging and he's not afraid to take leaps of faith with the plots of his works. Also the amazing dedication to the speed of his writing, not to mention the quality of said updates.

hatori: Self-mutilating, brutally honest and also a veritable cynic with a library of information within him, this author is one particular person who I draw a lot of inspiration from. In fact, if it wasn't because of Legacies of Fate, and his much missed Scions of Destiny, my own attempt at fanfiction writing, Destined Legacies, would never have been born. SI is a reflection of himself, quite literally, but also is one of the most relatable characters in any story read so far. And his OCs are also a very interesting bunch. Don't take it from me, read his work, and you'll see for yourself.

    ItsaRandomUsername

LeopardBear: Is tremendously good with writing humor, but hasn't updated his major fics in a while. IRUN UPDATE

Guy: I have only read two of his stories (due being new to the forum), but he has a very fun writing style, is not afraid of bringing things to a more darker side, he also has a good understanding of the nasuverse mechanics. A very good author that I look forward to reading more.

Techlology: Doesn't update enough, but when he does, my body is ready.

Spinach: Everything I could say has been said. Update MOAR, IRUn.

Alulim: Wonderful author. The only problem is that it has been a while since I read anything of his that I cannot give a concrete review of his style. (Hint: That was me urging you to write faster, IRUn.)

Elf: Needs to update more! Seriously.

Flere821: Rank: A. Author of 'Xth Loop', and is a must read if you're a Archer fan.

Keyne: A genius in crack. Nothing more needs to be said.

The Sylentnight: I enjoy his stories a lot. They seem brilliant and very well thought out. Then again, I've only read the Xth Loop: Sword & Stilled Time and seen the one - shot with Nanoha and Fate crossover so probably doesn't mean much.

    Alulim

Alulim: I write what I want, when I want. I also am able to keep my personal opinions about characters, events, and other things from interfering with my writing. I put the plot above all.

ItsaRandomUsername: Not afraid to get violent, dark and oppressive, but also not afraid to get random and silly. Bi-Polar writing in the best way possible. (apologies to anyone who actually is biploar, this is not meant to offend and is in good fun)

Xamusel: He can be funny when he wants to, and it's no surprise that he can make a mecha franchise mix well with the Nasuverse (even though I haven't read or seen said mecha in my life, I'm more inclined to read it soon, as he made me interested in Linebarrels of Iron just by my reading the story). I wouldn't be surprised if he wrote a story based on the Tsukihime franchise next, because he knows enough to make the stories interesting.

The Sylentnight: I like the guy. I think his story Fate MACHINA Vardant is enjoyable. I never thought it be possible to do a Fate/Stay Night crossover with robots. Glad this guy prove me wrong.

    VelspertheCat

Arashi_Leonhart: I really love his ability to go between the serious and the seriously funny without whiplash. His ideas make me think of something like, say, Ouran High School Host Club in how he can do very amusing things but use the humor to edge in some seriously awesome characterization and moments.

Guy: Vesper is awesome, his fics are creative and give lulz, he can make the most disgusting situation very funny.

ItsaRandomUsername: The man knows how to write damned good action-comedies. Able to seamlessly make readers laugh at his jokes and squee in the face of awesomness. Better than he thinks at writing action scenes, too. Also, Velsper isn't afraid to take it dark if the story calls for it to great effect. All in all, Velsper likes having fun with his work.

Spinach: Takes creativity to the next level. Velsper isn't afraid to try something new, and his ideas always feel fresh and exciting. His awesome premises are only rivaled by his amazing sense of humor.

    deviatesfish: Velsper is boss.

Techlology: You never know what you're going to get. Awesome action scenes interlaced with cracky humour make for an engagingly unpredictable experience.

Alulim: His stories are unadulterated awesomeness. He regularly pulls of the ridiculous and makes it believable

Elf: His fic was so awesome that I convinced him to post it here. He does great comedic work and can handle horror and pathos as well. Romance is a little on the weak side, and my one complaint would be while the Archer doing Old Spice is hilarious, there's only so much suspencion of disbelief a reader can take. If he went a tad more realistic, he'd be pretty much perfect.

RanmaBushiko: Dear god, some of his stories are epic. Period. There is no feasible way to make them more over the top in epicness than they can go.

Keyne: Lengthy but interesting. Always a good read.

The Sylentnight: What can i say. I love his story I Put On My Robe And Wizard Hat. He's funny and a very talented author. I hope to see more soon.

    Five_X

LeopardBear: Is a very good technical writer, and for his main fic, the Manhattan Project II, has created a excellent new setting. However, monster updates abound, be warned. (Also really really OP stuff that may cause rage)

Spinach: Interesting concepts that Five is well read on make his works interesting, impressive fight scenes that can really draw me in and are easy to visualize in my mind.

deviatesfish: is aroused by things Roman, Latin, or of history. Very receptive to ideas and suggestions and is not afraid to challenge or be challenged. Certainly reads more than I do. Has a good sense of humor. Tends to desire fan art. Has promised me his soul in exchange for a few oil paintings. Does his research in great detail and is easily one of the best technical writers I have read.

Bloble: Has the uncanny ability to take a story and turn it into a sprawling epic. Is able to juggle dozens of characters and story lines without getting confused or tangled up, and is an excellent creator of atmosphere. Is also skilled in designing characters who are unique and believable without seeming overdone.

Flere821: Rank: B(-). 'Negatum Seipsum' is the fic I follow, can't quite get into Manhattan Project. The minus is solely there because I'm not quite sure if he's as good as other B rank writers. Good with both drama and action. Quality of lemon writing to be determined.

Guy: The other reason I joined the forum, one of the best action scene writer I've ever seen, his main work (Manhatan Project II) is awesome incarnate, but due it's lenght the author has sometimes to kill servants without giving them much depht (which is understandable).

Radiantbeam: Very good with emotional writing when it calls for it, and quite good at building up character relationships and interaction. A merciless tease.

    Tobias

Arashi_Leonhart: About as solidly a "wham-bang!" sort of emotional writer as you'll find here. I don't think I've ever read something that had me so quickly in a headspace as when I read his "Letter" series.

Alulim: This bird of the raping variety can and will pull your emotional strings. If the letters series doesn't make you feel something, nothing will.

Verg Avesta: To be honest, rapebird's "Dear ---" series was the one thing that inspired me to write the "Faker" Christmas special last year. I must admit that the raw emotions his text was awakening was simply amazing. Although sometimes his text can be incomprehensible, I feel that as long as that "barrier" is overcome, his works are (almost) always worth reading. Just......work on that grammar, okay?

Keyne: Very emotional writing, judging from the "Dear ---" series. I'd like to see more of his stuff.

    RanmaBushiko

RanmaBushiko: I started writing fanfiction because I was bored, and I was curious enough on how my plot bunny would turn out, that I thought I'd write it myself. I'm still quite stunned that Blades Under a Crimson Moon was so well recieved, honestly. Still a bit shocked that people LIKE my writing, too, considering how bad my characterization is, in my eyes, compared to other people's. As for my stories, I prefer plots that have layers of subtleties as well as little hints, where when you look back at it, it all makes sense, but up until that point, you might have no clue what on earth is going on. I blame the PS1 game Xenogears for this. I really do. I also insert a lot of things I've learned about how Ki works into my stories, as well as some of the more interesting stuff I've picked up over the years, and use that to tweak character development slightly. Not so much a rewrite of how the abilities work, so much as "Well, if this trick I know works in real life, what if one of the characters ran into it by accident, and figured it out themselves?". Surprisingly, it makes my characters overpowered, but it works out well, too.

Kieran: A possible successor to MrTags' title as Beast Lair's God of Overkill, judging by a number of his works. Much of his works deal with video games, and esoteric mysticism, but he makes the oddest combinations work well.

    Erlkonig

ItsaRandomUsername: Writes unadulterated awesomness, both in fanfiction and as a Role-Playing GM.

    Twelveseal

Twelveseal: I have a tendency to go on hiatus for extended periods of time, and may lose motivation. I use a cast size that could easily be too large. My grammar isn't bad, but it's not perfect, either, and I'm prone to some truly insane ideas sometimes. Also, I've been known to use OC's, though usually not very many.

ItsaRandomUsername: Totally friggin' awesome. Killer action, fun humor, good atmosphere, isn't afraid to fuss with canon in a believable way in order to tell a story, throws in shout-outs to canon/other franchises as fun Easter Eggs. Also, super-powered jailbait lemons for his fanfiction project. Roleplays in his spare time.

Alulim: Does great stuff and is able to pull multiple, seemingly-unrelated plots together in a seamless and deep storyline. Plus lolis.

    Nerroth

Kieran: A scholar, a Sakura fan, and the author of the only Fate/Transformers fusion I've ever liked - mainly because I didn't think writing one was really possible.

    deviatesfish

Neir: I find fish's writing to be very... charged. Powerful.

ItsaRandomUsername: Fish's writing has a lot of heart. The blood, sweat, tears, and time spent are readily seen and contribute to the overall experience of Fish's stories.

Techlology: Very descriptive narrative, lots of detail. Emotionally charged. Tends to not finish his works...

Spinach: I feel my thoughts return to what I thought of Kieran. Fishie does everything very well, without overly excelling anywhere.

Froggie: I greatly enjoy reading his stories. Since I started reading his works he has improved greatly as his most current stories are extremely vibrant compared to his initial attempts at fanfiction. He has developed a great talent for writing charming scenes and has a knack for interesting usage of sometimes overlooked canon elements. Simply put, his stories and characters are lively and very engaging. Everything from mundane scenes to combat to pensive moments is handled with great care and attention to detail. However, he's very fickle and starts many projects that advance either at a glacial pace or not at all. Damnit, Fishie, gimme more TTM.

Flere821: Rank: A. 'The Third Magic' is one of the best fics I've read. Haven't updated for a while so him being one of the top-tier writers I've come across is all I can remember.

solopy567: Only, IF ONLY, you would finish your fanfics. There are well done and they are good ideas. I really liked The Third Magic, yet Y U NO FINISH THEM?!?!?!

Guy: Has some of the greatest fics of the fandom, can be quite dark when he wants to, I find his ideais very original, he takes a normal concept and modifies it alot, but from what I've seen he does not update regularly.

alguLoD: Whose name I keep reading as "deviant fish," and I can't ever keep the idea of deviates writing lemons involving fishes practicing BDSM out of my head whenever I read fish's name. An amazing writer, to put it lightly. One of the best fanfic writers whose works I've ever read, just all-round. Deviates' stories have an unfortunate tendency to die off or slip into hibernation, however.

    Verg Avesta

Tobias: Verg avesta has an ability to capture a moment, be it action or comedy I think is probably the best on the board.

Spinach: Verg can pull out emotions like nobody else. Everything he writes really pulls me in and has me feeling exactly what he wants me to feel. Everything. Sometimes makes small grammar mistakes, but I'm so enraptured by his writing that it doesn't bother me.

Flere821: Only read 'twelve days of Saturnalia' and 'Fate/somnium Summer redux'. Rank: B+. (subject to change after reading his crack poem on Roa. Epic lulz is Epic. Possibly A-)

RanmaBushiko: Sheer awesomeness for the Christmas stories. "How the Roa stole Christmas" was just hilarious. Sheer, raw hilariousness in it's finest form.

    Froggie

Techlology: Needs more Iskander, like now.

deviatesfish: is very detail oriented yet able to say much in a few words. Froggie's mastery of the English language far exceeds mine; Froogie is able to describe thing in a few, elegant words that I can understand right away, yet am unable to think up when I try to write on my own. Froggie has some problem with updating expediently, mainly because Froggie is being distracted constantly by /a/ and the role playing games on this forum. Froggie has no problem with taking criticism and is very receptive to new ideas. Needs to update more.

Flere821: Rank: B+(+). Think of him as a very slightly less-awesome version of deviatefish. Rank subject to change after reading some more Alexandriad.

Guy: One of the reasons I joined the forum, her fics awesome simply put. She takes normal concepts and turn them into awesome, it is impressive what she can do with a normal concept like Louise (FoZ) summoning another person instead of Saito.

alguLoD: Incredible writer. Much of the same praise that is heaped upon deviatesfish and the complaints leveraged against the same can also be applied to Froggie - their writing greatly resembles each others - to the point where a lot of people mix them up - but unfortunately they also share the unfortunate tendency for their stories to die off.

    Cascade

Kieran: A skilled writer who doesn't update enough. He likes focussing on some of the more esoteric Nasuverse concepts, usually by using an outside character's reaction or introduction to them. He can be trusted to handle any character he writes with respect and care (as he's using one of mine, at the moment). He needs more attention.

    MrTags

Kieran: Beast Lair's God of Overkill. Epic premises, overwhelming amounts of power - fans of Dragon Ball Z and its ilk will likely feel right at home, as 'Tags has no problem amping up things another level when you think things can't get any more insane. Also given to interesting philosophical considerations on the part of the Tsukihime cast, as seen in his main work. Fair warning, though - his primary opus does contain an SI as a major force.

    Kyokushi

Kyokushi: Not very good at describing things so everything is really short. Is also prone to never finishing anything.

    Xamusel

Xamusel: I originally got into fan fiction as a Shaman King fan-boy who was going to write Shaman King stories, but that went down the drain the more I got into other stuff. Long story short, however, I eventually wound up liking the Nasuverse through the Fate/stay Night anime (before eventually learning about the Visual Novel) and have found my knowledge half-baked at the moment. Of course, my half-baked knowledge is one of those things that I really (and I mean really) hate with nothing above it other than what I hate in real life, other than my lack of know-how on certain chat sites I refuse to name. On that note, for those that were wondering, I don't have such half-baked knowledge in an RPG that I own that hardly anyone here has heard about with the exception of a few people (Anima: Beyond Fantasy is the name of the RPG, and for those that wish to know, I'll be working on those stories that require no knowledge of Anima as soon as humanly possible). I hope that I can receive some more positive feedback for my stories when I release chapters of them. Also, my chapters tend to be big, at least with my Gundam story. Fair warning for those not used to me writing much.

LeopardBear: Really could get familiar with the source before writing, otherwise no major complaints.

Alulim: While he may not always think things through as much as he should, he can come up with a nigh-endless amount of interesting ideas on the fly. Consistent quality is a bonus.

    Arashi_Leonhart

Chapel: Arashi is love. Far side love. High quality and good output speed. Likes puns. I enjoy that he can sneak humor into an otherwise serious scene.

Pata Hikari: The master of atmosphere, the links to music are great in setting the tone.

Radiantbeam: Also the king of awesome.

ItsaRandomUsername: Meshes action, character development and plot well. In addition to that, he also has a good technical understanding of Type-MOON lore and is able to come up with plausible what-ifs and concepts for his work. Tends to update quickly. Like posting appropriate links to BGM for his works to set the mood. Likely to overcome Elf any day now as Beast's Lair's resident Porn Overlord if current trends continue.

Techlology: Writes a badass Shirou. Love his style. Concise narrative, almost bordering minimalistic in some parts. Very "themey". Character interactions are natural. An offbeat sense of humour that translates well into his work. Also, porn.

Spinach: I like watching stories written by Arashi unfold, everything feels like something that could and would happen in canon were circumstances as he writes them. Characters normally feel spot on, and never feel OOC. Minimalistic writing style makes me sad during action scenes.

Froggie: A simple style that is packed with emotion. I greatly love the dialogue in his stories, the heartfelt moments and the humor. He can really make characters shine, particularly Shirou. It's a credit to his skill as a writer that he was able to keep me engaged in a story in which an OC featured prominently and even make me care for his creation. However, at times, I've found myself thinking that the focus on characters reaches such a point that the world itself feels somewhat bland, shining figures moving through a white void. Not that it matters much, since his character driven stories are a joy to read.

Elf: Foreplay. The porn is pretty good, but you're a little too vague sometimes, and there's not enough foreplay. Now the Rider/Archer/Rin/Shinji orgy was awesome. However your erotica needs a bit more detail. Remember there are smells, tastes, and sounds in sex. Stuff like the bed creaking, or Rin's kisses tasted like tea or that semen is salty and bitter etc. Devil's in the details.

    Flere821: Overall Rank: A(-). Drama: A. Lemon: A-. Humour: B+.

RanmaBushiko: His stuff is great. Shirou's well written in all of them, and well in character.

Keyne: Always knows how to hit my weak spot with his works. The flow of his stories feel like streams, steadily and gradually growing until the climax. His lemons are also great, they.. "pull me along with the current". I can't stop reading once I get to that moment. Simple, yet high-quality. That's my Arashi!

The Sylentnight: I liked his stories a lot. It's really good and he's very good with characterization. I enjoyed his story Escaping Fate and I am loving Fate Far Side. I think his ideas are brilliant.

Arch-Magos Winter: Swapper of Ships. Writes a lot of Shirou focused stories, and writes them very very well. Some of his stuff I do find little moments where I lose suspetsion of disbelief (Excaliber in UBW that summons Saber. Really made me take a step back and think "What the fuck is going on?") but that's rare and overall doesn't detract from the way he writes.

Zalgo Jenkins: I would agree with what a lot of other people have said here. He integrates atmosphere, mood, and character extremely well. Yeah, admittedly the action scenes are more limited than some, but those aren't always the primary focus. The minimalist writing style makes you fix on little points that expand after you roll them around in your mind. They stick with you a lot better than walls of description because they cohere with the characters' mindsets and the story's mood. The snark and bits of humor are also excellent whenever he chooses to insert them. (Which he does at the right points and in proper quantities). What I See remains my favorite short (serious) story on BL.

    Aladar

Spinach: I think Aladar can really set a mood, and capture an entirely different feeling with what seems like ease. His "A Stolen Heart" is still my favorite fic on BL because of his creativity and excellent ability to set a mood.

I3uster: very nice concepts and atmospheric writing, needs to update faster though.

    LeopardBear

LeopardBear: I don't finish shit. Beware.

    Moczo

Moczo: I... don't update often enough. That is my main caveat to anyone seeking to read my works: The updates are few and painfully far between. Beyond that, I focus on action and humor, with a smattering of what I claim to be romance.

Radiantbeam: Amazing humor, amazing character development, and damn good at romance despite what he seems to think.

ItsaRandomUsername: Good action, sound writing mechanics, and gradually builds romance over time in a believable way - Moczo's writing is just plain fun.

Flere821: Read that 'Ilya Route' fic. Rank: A(+). (rank possibly influenced by his Nanoha fic). Noticeably good at humour. Drama on par with Beam if not Elf.

Elf: He writes amazing action sequences, and has done the impossible for me: Made me like True Assassin. His characterization is very well played, see TA as above example acting like a no-nonsense contract killer and chiding Rin, Archer, and Lancer's fashion choices for primary colors was a nice touch (I could list other instances, because they're a lot, but something about his TA really stuck with me). Plus mother fucking Dark Lancer. He has a nice grasp or horror too, and I'd love to see him branch out with that. Also Mother Fucking Dark Lancer.

Lycodrake: Makes you laugh, cry, and your sides hurt from both at the same time, all the while having a plot that he follows...though it's more of a guideline. XD

The Sylentnight: He's a really good writer. He makes some of the best stories I have ever had the pleasure to read. Has real talent in adding humor into and otherwise serious situation.

Flere821: Rank: A+. Master of humour and crack in Beast Lair. To me, he's ranked somewhere among the top 3 authors here. When fueled by Beam, he's unstoppable. Mirror, Mirror and Shinderella is a few examples of what he can be capable of.

Zalgo Jenkins: Obligatory. He seems to have mastered writing comedy, although he's also done some very good serious work. The occasional Pratchett-esque narration, and the bits of absurdity ("Me llamo Luchador Rin...") work very well, and he's good at throwing the unexpected at the reader. Oddly enough, though, I think that his real strength lies in rhythm. He knows exactly how to pace and arrange dialogue to make it funny. There are several occasions where he takes reasonably good bits and make them hilarious with just punctuation and phrasing. His best dialogue has this weird stutter-step feel to it that keeps the reader guessing.

    Bloble

Bloble: ...Um... Has... good grammar? Isn't exactly the worst writer in the world? Willing to write pretty much anything?

Arashi_Leonhart: Has some great interactions going on characters that needed more love.

Spinach: Bloble writes a good fight, and his creativity during action scenes I find to be either hit or miss, with some moments really coming off as genius and others really missing the mark.

Guy: Has a lot of good ideas and do not fail on delivering them, I have only read one fic of his and it is made of win.

Xamusel: I like his writing as an author, it just needs to be improved upon somewhat. If anything, he knows his stuff better than I'd have imagined.

Alulim: If you want action, you get action. His interpretation of Lancer is the best I've seen.

Flere821: Author of 'Lancer gets Serious'. Rank: B(+). Overshadowed by other awesome authors of BL.

deviatesfish: likes to write stories about bros or something. I don't know. Seems to have very mature style for someone so young. Kind of gay for Lancer though.

alguLoD: Great writer, poor moral integrity. Willing to bribe people with porn stories to earn their co-operation. I'm willing to forgive this, however, as his stories are universally superb, and his lemons give me Excalibur.

    Heroslayer

Kyokushi: needs to put up a real update soon

Flere821: Rank: B. Have great ideas, it's the update speed that's holding him back.

The Sylentnight: I enjoy reading Mahou Senki: Lyrical Days. He's good at characterization and it's always fun to read his stories.

    PhoenixAct

Arashi_Leonhart: One to watch out for, methinks.

Kieran: Author of a canon Fate fic I'd really like to see more of.

    alfheimwanderer‎

Alulim: I can't say enough good things about this author...but I will have to do with what I can. Does wonderful crossovers that join the two universes in a seamless manner. Also the guy who inspired me to write my own stuff.

deviatesfish: Alf critiqued and helped me write the way I can today. If anything is to be said about my writing that is a compliment, then it should be said of Alf too. In fact, I'm surprised and annoyed that Alf's writing workshop thread is not stickied, but this thread is. He doesn't just write well enough that people can learn from him by reading his stories, he is also a good instructor of how to write better. In his many works, he employes a wide variety of literary devices to great effect and does detailed research of the topics he writes about, both of which he is willing to impart upon anyone wishing to learn. Is a god.

Froggie: Is one of the authors I really look up to and one of the main reasons for my joining this forum. He has a great control of the language and can craft some beautiful and moody scenes which really get you into the story. The atmosphere in the worlds he create is positively vibrant. We have worked together in one story and whenever he would send corrected drafts back to me, I would often find myself thinking: "Why didn't I think of that first?" However, if I had one complaint, it's that he has a tendency to sometimes go off on a tangent, explaining details of the world. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but will sometimes detract from a particular scene by losing focus.

Flere821: Rank: A(+). Possibly the best author on BL for the 'how' of writing. His story however (IMO) tend to be dark to the point it makes HF feels tame. *cough* Velle Anima & Echoes of the Void *cough*. Fletching is a good read though.

Kieran: A fan of "Zero no Tsukaima" who has successfully integrated two and a half (the third one's a collaboration) different variants of the story with Type-Moon characters, and made them both intriguing and exciting, despite beginning with the same basic premise for all three. He seems to excel at merging disparate series with Type-Moon, as some of his earlier works show well. Doesn't update nearly as often as I'd like, but always worth the wait.

alguLoD: Were I a girl, I'd want his babies. One of the most amazing writers alive, no ands, buts or ifs about it. It's a pity that most of his stories focus around Kara no Kyokai, a franchise I'm almost completely uninterested by. That fact does not change the quality of his writings, however.

Suncofold: I love Alfheim, but I found that it's hard to bounce back to his stories. I like to read multiple things at once, and sometimes it's hard to read his stories while skipping back and forth. But when I'm reading just his stuff, it blows me away with how great it is.

    Stormedge

Alulim: He is an expert at fleshing out a character's motivations. Storm can and will have a believable reason and explanation for anything that a character he writes does (and doesn't, but might, do). Plus yanderes for the win.

Flere821: Rank: A+. Tainted Ideals is so good the '+' is not in brackets. Kotomine Shirou is WIN. If you like Gilgamesh, Kotomine, Rin or Assassin!Jack you'll love the fic. Master of humour, drama & action, shown some tragedy scenes and great at blending them into one fic.

Guy: I like his work alot, he updates regurlarly, is very original and is not afraid of doing things differently (Otaku Gil is gold), his humor is spot on and his WAFF is very sweet, plus he seems open for ideias, one of my favorite authors on the fandom.

Lycodrake: I greatly enjoy everything that I’ve seen him write, Tainted Ideals being the main one I can remember, and his characterization is wonderfully done and in detail without being overdone. Only things I might critique are Otaku Gil and TI!Illya, and those are probably just my mileage varying. Also: that Jackie. X3

Zalgo Jenkins: His Tainted Ideals is, IMO, the best long story in the fandom. He mixes humor into a fairly serious plot, but doesn't overuse it. This is key. We all have a tendency to insert silliness for silliness's sake, especially since many BL authors are pretty good at it. Stormedge is pretty restrained. He certainly can write funny moments (see his Pokemon/Fate riff, which is hilarious), but knows when he doesn't need to. He strikesvery close to the perfect balance between action -- where his scenes are all excellent -- mystery, character interaction, humor, darkness (oh, boy...), and even a little bit of romance. He also chose to use a twisted person as the main viewpoint character, and made him both consistent and sympathetic. Not easy. Unlike GB above, he never lets the story get away from him. The pace remains frantic despite a pretty long word count.

    Dark Pulse

Bloble: The only writer who has ever made me ship a yuri pairing. On an unrelated note, his writing is so well done and philosophical that numerous times it made me question the meaning of life before remembering that it was 42. His quality of writing is also outstanding. I don't think I've ever noticed a single grammar or spelling mistake from him.

    fraggle

Flere821: Rank: C-A(+). Author of 'Fate/Night Sky' (Rank B(+)). Wielder of 'Unlimited Snippet Works', as proven in Xth Loop and MSLD threads. Snippets vary in quality, though they tend to be B-ish. Focuses mainly on humour, slice of life, and the occasional lemon.

Lycodrake: Other than his wonderful Omake that seem to spawn like Tribbles…Fate/Night Stay. I don’t know if I can put into words the amount of potential that Fraggle has unleashed with that story, or how much I enjoy reading it. Only issues I might have are the Omake that seem to pop up often and ship-tease…but that might just be me. XP

alguLoD: Appears to be dyslexic, so the grammar and spelling of his stories are pretty poor if he doesn't get them beta-read beforehand. Even so, however, his stories are pretty damn good. Appears to be afflicted with omakealitis, a condition which compels him to write omake after omake. But if you can get past his issues, you'll find that his stories are worth dying for.

The Sylentnight: Not much to say really. I like his ability of turning anything into a snippit and love reading them. As for his main story Fate/Night Sky, I think it's good. Really good.

hatori: The Tome of Endless Snippets is a drug. 'Nuff said.

lhklan; While the Tome of Endless Snippets contains numerous quality stories, the Valve Time of his production makes things rather difficult to truly enjoy.

    MereoFlare

RanmaBushiko: The stories are great. The humor ones leave me trying to not laugh my ass off when my family's asleep, more often then not.

alguLoD: I hate Mereo Flare, but that's only because I have a hard time not waking the entire neighborhood up when reading Flare's stories. One of the best crack writers out there.
I'd also write something about you and Radiantbeam, but I keep mixing your stories together in my head.

    Pureauthor

RanmaBushiko: Pureauthor's Tsukihime writings are wonderful to read, and I enjoy the Shiki/Arcueid relationships in them.

Chacho: One of Pure's strongest points is pitch-perfect characterization and dialogue: the more-serious one-shots in World of the Moon read like unreleased scenes from Tsukihime II, and the lighthearted fluff/slice of life has a lot in common with KT. The same ability to faithfully capture the soul and mannerisms of his characters also applies to Melancholy of One, which is no small achievement given its AU setting and ambitious scope. So far, though, I'd have to give World of the Moon higher marks, since its respectful exploration of Shiki and Arcueid's relationship actually brought genuine tears to my eyes. In public. If you enjoy heartfelt romance or are a fan of Tohno Shiki and/or Arcueid, Pure's work will be right up your alley.

Flere821: Rank: A(+). Might not do action much, and his humour might be slightly lower than the rest of the other authors I've placed at A-rank, but dear lord he does brilliant emotional scenes. Check out 'World of the Moon' if you like the Tsukihime main characters.

The Sylentnight: Very good with his writing. It is pretty emotional and he does good Tsukihime.

    Lycodrake

Aiden: Needs some work, but, trying!

The Sylentnight: Has some confidence issues but he has a lot of neat ideas. He does some great snippits.

Radiantbeam: Has a lot of potential. Needs to work more on developing context and background for his situations, but overall a rather promising writer. Definitely needs to have more confidence in himself.

NamesAreHardToComeUpWith: He writes good stories and has good ideas, but has a bit of difficulty in some aspects. He is, however, steadily getting better and hasn't given up.

    Aiden

Flere821: Newly crowned 'King of Snippets'. Rank: A. What he lacks in full chapters he more than makes up for with updating speed of snippets. Writes mostly FSN stuff, but there's a few Prototype snippets here and there. The guy knows how to write humour and drama like the best of them (probably due to spending time with Beam).

The Sylentnight: Being pretty damn good in those snippits. Seems to mostly do only one shots and the like but they are very entertaining reads and he seems to have a lot of ideas. Some times his ideas go along with RadiantBeam

Radiantbeam: DUDE WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING YOUR TALENT ALL THIS TIME? An amazingly good writer, very good at flow of thought and character interaction. Puts my writing speed and rate of ideas to shame.

Moczo: Not only is the quality consistently high, his output rate is astonishing. I would kill for that kind of writing speed, and he has no shortage of new ideas to use it on.

Lycodrake: Daaamn, man. Never knew he had this much potential, and can only guess that inspiration hit him like a sack of bricks or a 18-wheeler. Writes wonderfully all around, and brought to BL Yukika moe and Mecha Saber. Much appreciated and awesome.

NamesAreHardToComeUpWith: He makes a lot of drabbles, with tremendous speed, and they stay at a pretty high level of quality. Definitely worth anyone's time.

lhklan: Intriguing descriptions of the DAA, particularly Altrouge. Also quite good at writing unexpected pairings. My favorite is still that Sella/Shirou one. Also, I'msorryfornotfinishingthatdarepleasedon'thurtme!

    NamesAreHardToComeUpWith

NamesAreHardToComeUpWith: I can write darker stories with relative ease, and on a lucky day I will be able to write some great crack. I have my own preference for Grimdark scenarios, but I can work with anything once given the basics of an idea. I have a weakness against casual character interactions, though, which have often caused me to freeze up for hours/days.

The Sylentnight: he does some nice crack fics and also his main fics are really nice. Seems to have a thing for a bit of GrimDark and has his bone for Ayako

Radiantbeam: An excellent, excellent writer. Switches effortlessly between angst and, occasionally, some gentle fluff without much trouble. Very, very good at developing character relationships and interactions, and the first person to ever make me actually like Lorelei as a character (granted, probably because so few people write with her).

    Frantic Author

The Sylentnight: Needs a bit work on canon but I believe he has a lot pretty interesting ideas.

    Roydle

The Sylentnight: Does some nice short snippits in his stories and they are very enjoyable to read.

    Suncofold

Suncofold: Speaking of myself, I'm not really sure what I'm good at. I don't think I've posted enough here, and all my crap on Fanfiction.net is crap. I find it a struggle to write dialogue not pertaining to the plot, and characterization is hit and miss from what I've been told. However, I do my best to make sure my grammar and spelling is correct. I really should post and update more -_____-

    Agailius

NamesAreHardToComeUpWith: Doesn't give up. He's made mistakes with characterization, and other things, but tried again instead of burying his head in the sand. To couple with that, he has some darn good ideas, which he makes even better by fusing with other good ideas.

Arch-Magos Winter: Defender of Noblebright. Has an enthusiasm about what he writes, which is really nice. He's a little too hesitant in my opinion to make things go horribly horribly wrong in his fiction, but I assume in time the Grimdark or Nobledark, likely Nobledark will overcome him. And on that day I shall welcome him into the fold. Worth taking a look, sorta popcorn and soda reads. Best line: "She wanted to mate with him."

    Misheard

Misheard: I'm better at really short pieces than things that have any plot, and I tend to lose interest in my multichapter works before they're done. Pretty good at porny oneshots, though.

Radiantbeam: Is making me honestly ship Zero!Caster/Ryuunosuke. I don't even know how she is, but she somehow just writes it in a way that works.

    Ivan The Mouse

Ivan The Mouse: I know I wrote a few pieces back in the Old BL, I'm running out of ideas right now and I'm not a good writer, I'll tell you and give you that. But aside from the fact that I want to write using minimalism, I just want to shock the readers with my subjects and themes, that's all.

    Santo

Arch-Magos Winter: Fight Scene Guru. While I promise I'll read through more of his drabbles later (Please don't shank me man) what I have read is good. He has a knack for fight scenes, and I'll admit that from now on, he'll be my primary consultant on all things fight scene.

lhklan: Master of the MoodWhiplash, can switch between moods so fast sometimes it can break a reader's metaphorical neck. Great fight scene, good fluff scene - don't start, Santo - and fantastic humor scenes. Have a tendency to repeat things for the sake of humor.

    Arch-Magos Winter

Arch-Magos Winter: Techpriest of Beasts Lair. Seems to have more ideas than time to do so, and often enjoys the concepts of an idea coming together more than putting them on paper. Tends to update in short sections, but somewhat regularly. All in all, not the best writer on the site, but also not the worst. Give him a chance, he might surprise you.

    Daneel Rush

lhklan: Absolutely hilarious. If you're reading Daneel's work, chances are you will laugh at least once or twice. His fight scenes are also quite good, though he really should just focus on one thing at a time.

    Old_Iron

lhklan: Great at introspective and inner turmoil scenes. Also have a tendency to use purple prose, though not in a bad way.

    Gabriel Blessing

Zalgo Jenkins: A bit unusual, given that (1) he's not a BL author, (2) he doesn't like BL, and (3) a lot of posters don't like him either. His In Flight completely fell apart. The Hill of Swords worked significantly better because he didn't need to worry about pacing or manage a large cast. Give him either a small cast and focused plot (Debt of a Sword, some of his horror) or a prearranged plot (Hill of Swords) and he can pump out gigantic and fun-to-read chapters. He writes basically one character in multiple guises, but he does that character really well. And he writes incredible action scenes. I hear he's writing original fiction these days. Give him something like Lester Dent's prearranged pulp formula and a Dresdenesque assassin, and I think he could create churn out some very fun urban fantasy in vast quantities.

Forest is a vampire who's a bit too good for her own good and doesn't know when to leave things alone. Armed with a ridiculously large hand gun, martial arts skills, a bitching pony car, and a love for pop culture she fights the forces of evil. Urban Fantasy 80's Style.

Well, I guess I'll be adding to this.

Kieran: He has an impressive output speed and genuinely entertaining content. Threads tend to be long as hell though. Easy to talk to and will explain his reasoning to fans.

Elf: Writes an awesome Archer. Seems to to love vampires. More average output speed, great quality. Characters feel more human than I normally see.

Radiantbeam: I've only read the one fic. Herpderp. It was really good though.

Arashi_Leonheart: Arashi is love. Far side love. High quality and good output speed. Likes puns. I enjoy that he can sneak humor into an otherwise serious scene.

That's all for now. Chaple out.

So, I'll give an example of how this'll go:

Velsper: I really love his ability to go between the serious and the seriously funny without whiplash. His ideas make me think of something like, say, Ouran High School Host Club in how he can do very amusing things but use the humor to edge in some seriously awesome characterization and moments.

I find Beam writing very emotional, one of the few authors who can move me.

Vesper is awesome, his fics are creative and give lulz, he can make the most disgusting situation very funny.

Beam makes me go d'awwwwww.

Maybe.

Arashi: Also the king of awesome.

Elf: Queen of porn. Also very Archer-centric, and one of the reasons I fell in love with him as a character. Only real complaint is some minor spelling errors, but those are pretty easy to fix otherwise.

Moczo: Amazing humor, amazing character development, and damn good at romance despite what he seems to think.

I feel like people are afraid to say anything on the critical side that might be worth saying, like in the GB thread someone was saying Kieran has OCs and all.

    Okay, here goes. *deep breath*

Lantz: Very good ideas. He takes concepts and crossovers and tries to explore them to their full potential, which I admire and applaud him for. He seems pretty much open to any idea he has, and isn't afraid to write it out. The only real downside so far as I can see is the OC he uses for a majority of his stories, the shortness of his updates, and the fact that sometimes he isn't always completely receptive to critique.

Elf: She seems to have a fixation on having her female characters fold their arms under their breasts. :P
