    Christmas Promise

The young man stood in the middle of the snowy field, staring into the distance, lost in his own little world. Despite the fact that the sun was bright and riding high in the sky his breath rose before him in a fine mist. His right hand rested in his jacket pocket, clutched tight in this hand was a small box, a box that at the moment was worth more than almost anything else in his possession. The young man’s name was Shiki Tohno and he was waiting for someone.

Normally, during spring and summer, this field was bright and cheerful and filled with sunflowers. He could remember coming here three years ago and seeing her for the first time after…everything, the image made him feel warm. Now however it was the middle of winter, Christmas to be exact a time for lovers, which made it perfect for his purposes despite the lack of flora.

After he had started to think, his heart was beating soundly against his chest and a hundred different images were forcing themselves into his mind’s eye. He had been in difficult situations before but this was a whole different type of difficult, his instincts were far less useful here. It had been three years since the two of them had begun dating, three years since everything had very nearly gone to hell, fortunately everything had worked out in the end but still, it had come so very close. However, part of him believed that all those close calls made him treasure what he had all the more. And because of her he might live to see more than he otherwise would have, because of her…gift, although given what she’d been through because of it, it might be more appropriate to call it a curse.

The change between then and now though was obvious for anyone to see, so obvious that he could slap himself for missing it before, although, of course, he had the benefit of hindsight now. Still, there was a sparkle in her eyes now that hadn’t been there before, even when she was at her most hyperactive and her old smile looked plastered on compared to her new one. She still had that snicker of “fufufu” when she was up to no good but now she also had a giggle that was downright girlish and a full belly-laughed that had took him by surprise when he’d first heard it.

He’d informed his sister about what he had planned for today and met with her full approval, something that would not have happened a few years ago. She and Hisui had even helped him improve on the ideas he’d already had. Although she seemingly hadn’t been able resist taking a sly jab at him over it, although in much better nature than she would have in the past. Apparently, his plans had been in dire need of a woman’s touch. Akiha had even said the rest that the rest of the family knew that it was going ahead and would head off any objections, which was something he hadn’t thought of.

His hand tightened around the box in his pocket, his resolve restored; this was definitely what he wanted and he was pretty sure she would be happy about it too. Still, even if she did give him the answer he wanted, it would mean a few changes. He wouldn’t be able to live in the Tohno mansion anymore, that place held far too many painful memories for her; not that he liked the place that much himself but it would be odd not seeing Akiha and Hisui everyday after living with them for so long.

Shiki was so lost in his own thoughts that he didn’t hear the crunch of feet on snow behind him. He didn’t notice the footsteps become a little lighter as the figure approaching realised he wasn’t paying attention and began to sneak. He didn’t notice until the figured had managed to stalk right up to him and placed her hands on his shoulders. He spun around, sinking into a stance that suggested he was preparing to defend himself…and relaxed.

In front of him stood the woman he had just been thinking of. Her red hair stood out vividly against the white backdrop and her amber eyes seemed warm and alive. She was dressed up in a thick winter coat and boots and he thought the ribbon in her hair looked familiar. She brought one gloved hand up to cover her mouth as she gave her usual snicker.

“Fufufu. That’s no good Shiki; anyone could sneak up on you like that.”

“Kohaku…” There was a long moment where everything was still and quite and comfortable, until he decided to break it, “It’s a nice day isn’t it?” He couldn’t believe he just said that, he had to resist the urge to plant his forehead in the palm of his hand

“So, why are we out here?”

That was right, he was the one who had arranged to meet in this field but now that the moment was upon him, all the plans he had made with Akiha had flown out of his head.

    “Shiki?”

He took a deep breath and mastered himself something was telling him this was the moment. He’d had a whole speech planned out but he couldn’t remember it; that being the case, he was just going to have to push on and get straight to the main point, before the moment passed. Slowly he sank down to one knee and took her left hand in his, the knees of his pant immediately became soaked, he ignored it. He saw her expression change as though half of her seemed to recognise what he might be about to do and the other half couldn’t quite bring herself to believe it.

“Kohaku…we’ve been seeing each other for three years now and…” The words weren’t coming easily so he decided not just to jump to the point but jump to the point. He brought his right hand out of his pocket still holding the box, and briefly letting go of her hand he opened it. Inside was a ring, a simple gold band with a diamond set at the centre and she gasped as her mind finally allowed realisation to settle.

    “Kohaku, will you marry me?”

He watched her face run the gamut of emotions, ranging from that initial look of realisation to her eyebrows flying up towards her hair and her pupils dilating in shock. Finally he saw the tears begin to build and eventually stream from the corners of her eyes but even them noticed her nod her head, accepting his proposal. Carefully he removed the glove from her left hand and slipped the ring onto the appropriate finger. Kohaku raised her hand to her face and gazed at her new adornment through her tears.

When Shiki rose back to his feet his new fiancée flung herself at him and embraced him tightly and continued her sniffling into his shoulder; he hugged her back, neither of them said a word. In the future there would be much to think about home, family, children and more immediately the wedding itself but for the moment the two simply stood in each others embrace, sharing their warmth.

Ugh, this story was a pain to write, it was kind of like with Shiki in the fic itself, I knew what I wanted to say the words just wouldn't come. So that's why it's so short. Anyway, anyone have any comments?
