Hi guys! I'm undecided about a point of divergence in my fiction, so I thought about asking for help to break the stalemate in my head: should I have Spark!Shirou meet Rin in grade school or later?
Depends. What would be the reason for him to meet her earlier?
Linger: Complete. August, 1995. I met him. A branch off Part 3. Mikiya keeps his promise to meet Azaka, and meets again with that mysterious girl he once found in the rain.
Shinkai: Set in the Edo period. DHO-centric. As mysterious figures gather in the city, a young woman unearths the dark secrets of the Asakami family.
The Dollkeeper: A Fate side-story. The memoirs of the last tuner of the Einzberns. A record of the end of a family.
Overcount 2030: Extra x Notes. A girl with no memories is found by a nameless soldier, and wakes up to a world of war.
The way this sort of thing goes is that you go "Hey, I've got these two ideas, with this one I can do x, and the other y, what gives me more options to have fun with the story?"
Not "Hey, guys, I have two ideas. Pls expand."

Nothing that would be really important for the plot. It's just that since Rin has a competitive streak a mile wide, then putting her and a Spark!Shirou in same school would be a Clash of the Brain Titans waiting to happen. =)

I dunno man, I usually skip anything that has Shirou being anywhere near a genius at anything but cooking and making pointy objects.
Genius Shirou breaks my suspension of disbelief 10 out of 10 times.
Basically what I'm saying is if you make Shirou a genius, he is effectively no longer actually Shirou

If you put it that way I can't actually think of a rational reason to disagree with you, because by this point of my fic, besides looking the same, the only things Spark!Shirou has in common with canon Shirou are his deceased birth parents, being a Great Fuyuki Fire survivor and being adopted by Kiritsugu.
It's another case of SINO - we got that part. We're saying that if you actually want to try to stay true to the character and not have a SINO on your hands, then tone down on the "make Shirou a genius" thing.

"(X)INO", for "(Character) in name only" is an old acronym. GINO (Godzilla in name only) for the Godzilla from the 1998 film is probably what popularized it.
