There is life extension magecraft that several mages could have used to give them the time they need to reach their goals. Roa, Nero Chaos, Norikata Emyia (although he didn't actually become a Dead Apostle, he was researching how to become one, but he just got killed by his son before he could.) I think Darnic ate people's souls to extend his life, although that wasn't the only method (although people like Roa wouldn't care about murdering many innocent people for immortality.)
