Sigmund himself is actually a pretty interesting figure. He wasn’t a great monster slayer like Sigurd. He was just a guy who got screwed over by the world. From losing his siblings to losing his father to accidentally committing incest to having his sword shattered by Odin. Dudes basically a cosmic punching bag.

In the Old English tradition, he was a monster slayer. He and his first son, Sinfjötli (known as Fitela in this tradition), were known for slaying giants, and he also slew a dragon by himself.
Also, he knew what he was getting into when he drew the sword from the tree. He was promised greatness, not a peaceful life, and he dies happy knowing that his son (the as-yet unborn Sigurd) would be the greatest Völsung of all.

Maybe this is obvious to everyone but I think I found the basis to Faker Hephaestion's For He Is Another Iskandar Skill.

When Alexander and his closest friend Hephaestion went together to visit the captured Persian royal family, Sisygambis knelt to Hephaestion to plead for their lives, mistaking him for Alexander — Hephaestion was the taller, and both young men were similarly dressed. When she realized her mistake, she was acutely embarrassed, but Alexander reassured her with the words, "You were not mistaken, Mother; this man too is Alexander."

It has a couple great arcs (Akira's and Spring's, with the latter being the current one) and an excellent power system, but I really don't like the male lead. Didn't like the female lead either until the current arc starting taking her potential to its best logical conclusions.

The general consensus on the series is that it gives the reader a very unpleasant first impression but quickly grows out of it and starts running on a completely different tune by the second volume.

unpleasant first impression is quite risky on Shonen Jump since you can get axed easily, but I guess it's doing well.

I'm surprised it hasn't been axed, given what has happened to several manga with more promising starts within the past month. Red Hood, Neru, and probably Phantom Seer did not deserve their cancellations, though I think Red Hood gave an epic "fuck you" to SJ in its cancellation.

I could go on my lefty soapbox for this, but I did promise to tone it down.

But fate felt more like a 'fantasy that occasionally has urban elements' then 'urban fantasy' to me

Like there is a clear line between magic and normality and to me you never see things like 'normal item has magic properties' like in say WoD or many other similar properties

Showerthought: surtr is actually the most dangerous yandere’s in the nasuverse. Dude nearly destroyed the world just to showcase his love of Ophelia. If that doesn’t scream yandere then I don’t know what does.

That's not really what yandere means. It would imply him being crazy and doing crazy things for love, but that only possibly works for surtr if you apply a very human mindset to something that is very much not human at all. He's a conceptual manifestation of the end of the world, and he can only express himself in that destruction, so him expressing his love in that way isn't crazy, it's just twisted based on our view.

It's set in a modern day city with hidden world of magic. That's urban fantasy.
