The whole point of magi is preserving a legacy. That's why magic crests exist. So sacrificing your children to preserve your own existence would theoretically be taboo, because you're killing the chance of your family being preserved (not so say that some mages will do it zouken/darius/the dude who summoned gil in SF)
It's the casual sociopathicness that defines mages, but when they do horrible experiments on their children, it's for a reason.
In Case Files, the Iselma sisters want to seek asylum because they decide their father's magical experiments on them are risking the preservation of their magecraft.
Is there a reason why doing whatever you want with any spares set to inherit nothing would be a problem?
A spare is a spare is because you never know what might befall the heir. If you'd prefer to have no spare, to get the spare out of your hair, you may despair when your heir is suddenly no longer there.
