Did he take inspiration from anything Toby Fox made in the past?

He mentioned Undertale as his favorite game of <insert year Undertale came out in Japan here>.

  3. #32243
Is there a reason that year wouldn't be 2015?

And because Undertale was just some indie game by one guy who wasn’t even thinking of a Japanese release. Undertale only got translated with the PS4/Vita release, in Summer 2017.

Oh yeah, true. I remember MatPat and crew making a video sensationalizing Sans's use of 俺. That's actually a good way to know how much something mattered in the Undertale community: did MatPat sensationalize it?

It was a scripted debate video between MatPat and the guy who wrote the "Elizabeth from P3 and Margareth from P4 are one and the same" theory for him. The debate was over Sans using オイラ as a personal pronoun. IIRC, the whole debacle was among the lines of "some Japanese gamers who were already familiar with Undertale reacted to Sans' personal pronoun with 'wtf he uses oira lmao I was expecting something different'".

Speaking of indie games getting Japanese releases, here's hoping that OMORI finally gets one soon.

Given how Notes stuff is still coming up (mostly in GO) even 20+ years after it was published, I'm surprised Tsuki no Sango has remained its own isolated thing without any cross-pollination.

Though abandoned, forgotten, and scorned as out-of-date dolls, they continue to carry out their mission, unchanged from the time they were designed.

Omocat is one of the two Western authors being featured in the second volume of Pollyanna (the first being Toby Fox again, of course), so OMORI apparently enjoys some level of popularity in Japan.

Spiritron acceleration being used to make a perpetual motion machine

That's the same infrastructure as the Greater Grail.
Tsuki no Sango moon people were using souls to make energy.
