i think this was a problem with marketing more then anything. Sure, there was people who disliked the desing, but it was the way they handle that whole situation that brought negative light in their direction.

I'm not so sure about that. I remember, for instance, when the Gauntlet remake was released in 2014 and a lot of people were upset - to put it mildly - over the Valkyrie's design. I don't think it's a matter of poor marketing - or at least, poor marketing is only a small part of it.
You overestimate a singular flaw. Sure, the girl looks didn't win her any favours, but its not like the series was popular because of fanservice. The design is paltry to a certain plot element which kicks of the main plot.

That is a radical redesign of an already existing character, which is always controversial.

Less "overestimate" and more "judge what I have seen", and what I have seen over the years is a lot of supposed fans angry at female characters in various media* not meeting their so-called standards.
* And very often at female performers, too - see the harassment Laura Bailey has been receiving over her role as Abby.
And it didn't? I mean, the Gauntlet remake sold well enough they released a bunch of DLCs for it. It's a very fun game, I recommend it if it's your kind of game!
If you were talking about Last of Us 2, though, my understanding is that it sold very well, which I do think is a shame - but because of Naughty Dog's exploitation of workers, mind.
