Yeah that's something alot of authors do, I'm not sure how that's supposed to be some huge revelation there.
Hell, it's actually best for a writer to NOT make something completely concrete so you don't end up having to pull something from your ass and detract from the story because you left in no loopholes whatsoever.
Or you could just be good, define shit and not use loopholes. That's also a valid option. Though it requires more foresight and creativity.
