There are times where I wish I didn't know things. Illya made a much stronger impression on me early on in stay night where she's a psycho murder loli than she does now that I actually know what her deal is and how the rest of the franchise portrays her. There are lots of bad endings people mention as their favorites, but the one that sticks out in my mind the most is the one where Shirou gets pulverized by Herc and Illya says she'll turn him into a doll, seemingly for no reason whatsoever, and you're just like "what did he do to deserve this? what's your problem?" I think mostly because I was trying to figure out what her deal was, and also why people seemed to like her so much.

I mean, it does and it doesn't. On the one hand, you have more to work with in terms of Concrete Details. On the other hand, I can see how it would be easy to lose interest in matters of tone and execution. Then there's also the fact of how authentic you want to be to the spirit of the work, and how much you empathise with the perspectives of the authors.

Personally, I find it much more insufferable to defy or reject a story's worldview in spite of knowing more about it.

Well, on the other hand, I think if you're that concerned with "authenticity" that you purposefully won't "reject" later information for the sake of enriching your own imaginative version (say, fanfic), then I would posit that arguing that understanding less is better is wrong in the first place, because authenticity in such a context cannot stem from ignorance on the subject. I might even go as far as to say that someone who holds these two opinions at the same time is, as they say, a poser, more than anything concerned with the idea​ of what these opinions represent than their concrete meaning and value.
