FFVIII basically gives you hints but forces you to piece a lot of the backstory together yourself. Like Squall's parents the Big Bad's past etc.

Apparently the Ultimania guide did confirm the Big Bad's past as well or at least parts of it.

Well, there are, but they are kinda common to almost every sorceress there is.

On the Big Bad's past, listen to Edea's speech at the end of disc one, it contains a moderately large hint.

If I recall Ulti past, is that she was a witch that was hunted by the SEEDs in her lifetime right? After her death on the game a huge persecution against witches started, causing a stable time loop.

Ulti appears>Is killed>Start witch hunting season>Ulti runs to the past>Ulti appears.

After the SeeDs defeated Ultimecia her existance kind of became famous, which in turn lead people to fear Sorceresses. They seemed to have ignored that one of the ones that defeated Ultimecia (Rinoa) was also a sorceress.

This eventually lead to a persecution of Sorceresses under the belief that they are all bad. Through Edea Ultimecia says (paraphrased) "where is the big, bad sorceress from your nightmares?". Or words to that effect.

One such sorceress was evidently persecuted so much that she eventually snapped and went "You want Ultimecia? Then I'll give you Ultimecia." Thus turning her rise into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

FFVIII is interesting in that none of its villians are wholly bad, not even Ultimecia.
