Yeah, part of the reason the Ala Mhigan refugees are treated so badly is that Ala Mhigo tried to invade Gridania under the mad king. Later they had a civil war to try and get rid of him and the Garleans attacked in the middle of it and took over.
None of the other city states particularly liked Ala Mhigo before the occupation, especially Gridania; that's why they're so ambivalent about sending help and why the refugees are treated so badly.

Part of the Stormblood Bard questline is about trying to stop Gridania and Ala Mhigo from potentially going to war again
Yeah, I did the first bard quest when I unlocked the Fringes, and saw them bring up that old history, though they said that war was something like 200 years ago. On the other hand, for a nation of Elves and immortal devil children 200 years probably isn't that long.

Only 80 years ago, so still within living memory of some older folks. Elezen lifespans are about 20% longer than those of Hyur IIRC

So I just finished the Stormblood White Mage quests, and it's never been as bad as this. At least those other times people die in front of me, I can rationalize it away with people who aren't playing a healer. But to have them talk about how death is unavoidable in a WHM quest, especially when I used a LB3 and rez'd 20 people a few minutes ago is just aggravating.

I grabbed FFVII (which I've beaten once before) and FFVIII Remastered during the Steam winter sale. Haven't played even a little of VIII before so I'm looking forward to that.
Yeah like most RPGs it's fainting rather than death, and all the tool tips say "downed allies'. Which makes all the insta kills like doom and tank busters seem really tame. Not to.mention bosses like the ring out mantra ray from Dun Scaith. He's not trying to kill you he's throwing tornados to make you take a nap.

WoL-and-associated-3-to-23 adventurers are just that tough.

I do routinely punch out gods with my tiny dragon woman.
Which is a whole other story contrivance. "Oh no, five people with guns are harassing this innocent. What can I do, I just finished beating the hell out of Time?"

Some more Stormblood thoughts:
I love Alisaie. After so long with Alphinaud being all diplomacy it's fun to have a companion who's solution is to point you at an issue and say "wreck shop".

Yeah, Stormblood put in good work in regards to the Scions' character development, particularly Alisaie who was basically colorswapped Alphinaud until that point.
Only makes Lyse's sections feel so much worse, unfortunately (though it might be in part because I LOVED the Doman areas while Ala Mhigo is all shades of fucking brown).

Yeah it really feels like Lyse lost all her personality with her mask.
You're right that brown canyons with occasional enemy fort just don't hold a candle to Not-Japan, Pirates of the Caribbean, or The Little Mermaid.
Another Aside: I've now hit level 70 so I've unlocked every Job. Reaper seems fun and straightforward (and now I know what that Debuff I see 6 time on a raid boss actually means). Sage is super weird. Maybe it's just the intro quest itself, but it constantly seemed like it did no healing or shielding. "A tank busters coming" Ok I'll enhance heal for a shield. Quest failed. 10 times in a row.

I dunno, people say that Lyse was bad, but the Ala Mhigo resistance getting broken and getting itself together, along with post MSQ stuff had Lyse come into her own as a leader.
The most I can remember her doing before revealing her real name was the fated banquet near the end of ARR, so I can't fathom why people thought she was "better" back then when she got middling screentime.
I can't speak for others, but I'd rather have her as one half of a comedy duo, than a person who wanders into every situation shouting at farmers about why they don't try and get their village wiped out. That said, I'm now inMongoliaAzim Steppe and she's mellowed out a lot since Hein showed up. Or maybe it's just because the Xaela aren't a conquered people. Sort of.
I'm actually really liking this segment of the story, going to every clan and learning about their different philosophies. I wish there was more recognition that I was playing a Xaela though. The dungeon was really unique too, with the non violent boss.
It's really frustrating running a Raid continuously to try and get the one piece of gear you're missing. Thank god the HW raids are the one being spotlighted right now. At least it's really helping me level up my Tanks, hunting for that Void Ark helmet. It feels like Gunbreaker has too many mitigation buttons, though that might be because Warrior has half of theirs as heals.
