So here's my theory.
- Angelica was used as a catalyst for Pandora in the last HGW, which succeeded and caused what would have been the end of the world, but was stopped by Miyu.
- Erika is some sort of doll creates using a fragment of Angelica's soul.
- If Darius manages to open the box again, the entire world will be wiped out.

Okay, so, Darius has been around 1000 years and wants to 'save' the world. Seems to have a real thing about dramas and stories, but doesn't really attach much importance to life in general it seems, more the parts everyone plays.

Julian has been around 16 and for the past 5 has been Darius' host. Seems to be kind of an emo kid who didn't respond to Beatrice or Shirou until it was too late, Beatrice when she died and Shirou when it turned out they were 'enemies' of the Ainsworth.

I think, from what I can gather then, Darius only wants to 'protect' Erika in the same way he cares for Miyu. He doesn't give two shits about her well being as a person, but for the part she plays in his story, likely due to being the receptacle for Pandora and probably representing another Grail in this equation like Miyu.

Julian, due to his general lack of forthrightness in his personality and clear issues showing affection for people he cares about, not to mention his general cynicism as a person, might've culminated in the idea that killing Erika, thus destroying Darius' plan and freeing her from her clearly unhappy role as his puppet is the best way to save her.
