In the light of the last few chapters with Pandora saying that she wants to die and Julian saying that he wants to help with that, some of the old lines click now for me:

This is basically "I'd sacrifice anything to save Pandora." This directly says that he doesn't want Pandora to die.
Spoiler:
"No one wants to die, that's why Julian-sama..."
This line is worded in such a way, that the continuation almost writes itself: "...wants to save Pandora."
There's also the line where Illya tells Julian that she's going to save both Miyu and the world and Julian responds with "Even if you can save both, that's all you can save."
The missing link her is Pandora. Even if Illya found a way to save the world without killing Miyu, Illya's method will either open the box and kills Pandora, or it doesn't involve the box at all and Pandora remains in her eternal suffering. Either way, she's not saved.
I think this struggle is Julian's actual character arc. He actually really wants to save Pandora, but he just doesn't see a way for this to be done, even with the Holy Grail.
This is probably why he needs two grails, not one. One to open the pithos (and saving the world) and the other would be to help Pandora in some form or another.
This is also most likely why Gil said that he feels bad for him. He completely saw through his contradiction.

1. Jesus Christ these pages are way to short for something monthly.
2. "Everything can go wrong, will go wrong" well that power up stopped being helpful fast, then again I guess I should think of this battle with a similar mind as the last go princess precure fight, though the battle would ideally be easier when she comes to her realisation but meh
Remember when Prisma Illya chapters were like 18 pages or something? I'm really wishing we could go back to that type of page count. 3rei's arc is just way too damn long.
