On one hand, a new Gundam anime, and for 00 at that, focusing on in-between scenes that have never been explored before.
On the other hand, it seems like it's going to be CGI- and not necessarily the Unicorn/Narrative/Hathaway style of 2D mixed with CGI for mobile suits- and the description makes it sound like it may just be little shorts in the vein of Gundam Evolve.
Also, why not make an anime of Gundam 00F? (It's not that good, but it already exists!)

Most likely. Poncho guy looks like Iok, too. Electric Mohawk looks like he's brooding in front of a recolour of OG Gusion, so maybe related to NotGuts?
I was really hoping for this to be a prequel though. The Calamity War sounded metal as hell.

It's been quite a while since it was first announced so I'll re=post the game's synopsis.
It is the year P.D. 323. Gjallarhorn's political interference in Arbrau escalated into an armed conflict and came to an end thanks to Tekkadan.
News of Tekkadan's exploits has also reached the ears of Wistario Afam, a young man born and raised at the Radonitsa Colony near Venus. Venus, which lost to Mars in the initial contest for colony development, is a remote planet in which the four economic blocs have little interest. It is now used as a penal colony for criminals, whose inhabitants don't even have IDs.
Wistario, who hopes to change the status quo of his homeland, encounters a girl who claims to be the guide to the "Urdr-Hunt".

The fact that they look very much like something out of Reconguista makes me even more confused on whether this is supposed to be in the UC timeline or its own thing as they've been annoyingly vague on that.

I thought it had been stated somewhere that the Gunpla line for Witch From Mercury was separate from Universal Century, but upon second glance I cannot find any information of that sort at all.
Hopefully the reveal of the box art for Gundam Aerial will clear it up before long, but we'll see.
