The only meme I see there is SEED and we know japan loves that one. NA is the one that has G on there.
By the way, I finally sat down to check out that 20 minute prologue for Witch from Mercury. Hot damn was it good. Feels like it's a setting where humanity hasn't been in space that long either. Between this short and the character bio's I'm getting a bit of a Monte Cristo vibe right now.

Honestly what surprised me about SEED was how low it was on the list, as well as how overall high 00 was on both of them.
Hathaway being that high on the JP list is definitely some recency bias. Same thing for IBO on the NA list.
I'd say that G-Reco, Victory and AGE are similarly in a position of 'yeah that exists' within the franchise. I definitely wouldn't expect any of them on these lists. Turn A is in a similar boat, but that show at least has a hidden gem status within the fanbase, I feel.
Of course, these lists are always at best dubiously accurate. Still, always interesting to see stuff like this here and there.
I'm not surprised at all about 00. It's probably the best series they've put out in the last 20 years. Since 2001, you've basically got SEED, Destiny, 00, G-reco, AGE, and IBO on TV, and that's where you get the most recognition.

One would think so, but a significant amount of the Gundam fans I know (myself included, admittedly) haven't actually gone to see them, either in-person or on Youtube. The marketing's been kinda low-key for them, especially compared to Hathaway, and even now the way that characters interact in Regild Century takes time for me to get adjusted to.
As far as the American results... I know people a few years younger than me who first heard of Gundam from IBO, watched it, cried, and then decided not to watch anything else. On the other hand I've met people about a decade older than me who watched Wing on TV as kids and picked up model kits as adults, but still never really went back to watch other Gundam shows. In the middle, I introduced two my college roommates to the original MSG trilogy on Netflix- One of them got bored, the other bought the HG RX-78-2 after finishing the third movie. It's wild.
I would have expected Thunderbolt to rank higher, admittedly, but maybe I'm missing something.

...But I watched it two weeks ago? What version was that if it hasn't aired yet? Did they release it at a con or something?

Yes. They released it at a con and there was also a chinese hardsubbed release from somewhere. The version you watched was a fansub of the chinese release that edited the video to hide the chinese subs

"Happy birthday to you..."
I really enjoyed that. Very in media res which made it a little hard to follow on a first watch but I was engaged the entire time and I look forward to the rest of the series.

I know this is supposedly based on an episode of the original, but is it in UC or is it standalone? I wanna watch it.

Cool. Thanks.
I don't know if in media res can apply to something like this? It feels like there's almost zero chance of them going back further in time to explain what just happened.

I wouldn't say it's any more in media res than something like OG or SEED, but I guess it would feel like it is because it doesn't have an opening monologue explaining the setting.
Beyond that though, I really enjoyed it. Enough new takes on familiar concepts, while having a decent tone. If the rest of the show keeps up the quality, then it'll be great.
Also,

Yeah, this prologue episode punched me in the gut and launched me back eight years in time, when I saw Gundam Build Fighters for the first time. A very strong start, and I love all the implications about the Earth and Space balance that were mentioned in the background.
Spoiler:
New trailer, series comes out in October proper it seems.
