That part certainly pissed me off. They took one of the female anime characters I most respected, and then made me despise her for most of the season. She only started acting like her old self near the end, and even then they never fixed her relationship with Athrun apart from that little aside note of "Oh yea, they're back together again afterwards" that the director put in long after the run had ended.

When she was first introduced, Cagalli had all the traits I hate in an anime female - even down to her looks - but she quickly became my favourite character in the entire series. And then I got that in the sequel . . . Grrr.

And the director probably added that because the writer's stated reason for splitting them up in the first place was beyond idiotic: that Athrun would have to be the prince of his own country for their relationship to work. (If I didn't know better, I'd swear it was J. K. Rowling under an alias.)
