He even makes sure to mention that Shiki's character hasn't changed, just the way he reacts to his environment has, because the environment itself has changed.

I think what he means is that you read those lines and assume it means that instead of an active, stronger persona we'll get some shitty passive neet isekai hero pulled along and having a harder time coping. Being strong-willed should generally be an attractive thing, so you know, it's ok to be cautiously optimistic when you see a statement like that.

Shiki had a hard time coping even in the original anyway.

Man I really should have reread the manga at some point, this is like smoking gun for The Sixth being about undiscovered true magic, of course the translation isn't great though.

I pretty sure Nasu wants The Sixth to be the 6th true magic, there are many things point out that. The strongest ref is when Osiris express Aoko as the holder of The 5th Law while most characters called her as the holder of the 5th true magic so the 6th Law should be as same as True Magic. The eng version of MBAACC false to translate this easter egg.

Somehow people think that creators would spend all that time and effort and not go over new techniques, as well as update lore mechanics and narrative. That said, making a "modern" Shiki doesn't really sound bad. We've got plenty of introspective protags that have come up this past decade.
Sure it was the age of the cynical, acidic tongue, asshole but with a heart of...well not gold, maybe bronze, not like we don't have hopeful protags.

And we always go back to the tried and true powerlevels, because for all the cynicism and jaded words, the majority of the board has the chuuni gene in their veins.
