I can agree with that, even though F/z had it no where near as bad as F/ha.

No insult intended to the translators but the translation of Fate/Zero really does not read like any work written natively in English. There are far too many separate really short sentences. Perhaps some of it is down to Gen's writing style.

I'm surprised the thread went 404 with few replies. http://archive.easymodo.net/a/thread/52744058

No, Japanese to English just comes out like that a lot.

Well when we did f/z we valued accuracy to the original text above English fluency, which is why it read so odd. We also tried to keep to the way Gen did his 'one-sentence-only paragraphs' for originality's sake. For f/z to sound anywhere near natural English would require a complete overhaul of the thing, really.

    Wasn't F/Z translated Chinese-to-English?

Page for the project lists most of the TLs going from Chinese, with two people from Japanese.

    Huh.

...Well, I remember that one of the few times I went into the translation thread, "ojiisama" was translated as "Uncle", and was told that that came from the Chinese translation, so er...

^ Yeah I remember that incident. That was one of the moments when the Chinese actually made a mistake.

Haven't read that deeply, but I are amused that he chose to use Homicide Inquiry. Do people actually say that in the states/wherever?

I'm using Murder Inquiry in my little project

Reading it a bit right now. It also strikes me how it does read quite naturally as English. I now see the movies embellished the action scene for the first movie =)

Yeah, if you go to the Baka-Tsuki TL, you can see how much work got done on this one to make it read naturally.

I am finished with 5 now, and I must say, Nasus did what is widely known as "doing a Chuck Palahniuk".
That is, the movies are better than the Novels, even if they left out some exposition that is important to fan discussion. But if you think something like that makes the other work inferior then Complete Material must be the best book ever to you.

Keep in mind that when Nasu was told they wanted to make movies out KnK, he said he was embarrassed by KnK's writing and wanted to go and redo it all. So it's not like he doesn't know it.

    Yeah, I know about that.
Chuck said that he personally liked the movie for Fight Club more too, they're both good sports it seems.

Did you ever think of using this animated version as an opportunity to take the parts of the original novel which you always thought you would have liked to fix and improving those, altering the original elements?
Nasu: In Kara no Kyoukai, the first story, "Overlooking View" (俯瞰風景) is the clumsiest. I've always thought I wanted to do something about it, and I told a staff member, "If we're making this into a movie, I'm going to rewrite the first story; please let me do that." But he said, enthusiastically, "No, I want to work with it the way it is. I want to animate this!"
Then, when I read the finished script, they'd cut out over half of the unnecessary excess fat and had turned out something more interesting as a story, so I thought, "If it's like this, they don't need me to rewrite it."

I don't know if it's a translation artifact but the way Ryogi thinks and speaks totally disrupts my (wholly inaccurate) image of her from both the movies and some random KnK 4koma.
