If Herk can block a BP and not die from it, then good luck to Archer on having enough prana to keep pace with Herk. Ilya backed Herk ain't stopping anytime soon, so I bet on Herk to outlast Archer. Deploying UBW is different and pretty much Archer's only hope of overwhelming Herk enough to kill him multiple times and decisively.

Yeah....but he didn't, since the secnary in the aftermath of the battle is of Einzbern castle. So at least it's heavily implied that they're in the castle.

And while I'm tempted to say that piddly little trees aren't gonna slow Herk down, piddlier gravstones did slow Herk down in UBW. So meh. Meh I say, MEH!

I like this idea better. Especially if him talking about killing Herk was mostly bravado and putting on a strong face, which was the impression that I got from the scene. Archer's fucked, he knows it, Rin knows it, but they pretend otherwise.

That's what I got as well. He's screwed, but at the very least, he's going to put a dent in the bastard before he goes down. And flipping the bird at him as he dies.

Exactly. That'd the kind of death scene that makes me grin. And it's a good death scene for the plot, since EMIYA is not the hero of the story. He gets to be GAR, the protagonists get to have their moments, neither diminishes or overshadows the other.

So that's it, then? Archer had his back against the wall, so he decided to pull out all of his best tricks like Caladbolg, Three Wings Crane Realm, and UBW to damage Heracles enough to prevent Ilya from pursuing Shirou, Saber, and Rin.

A cornered fighter is by far the most dangerous. Archer killed Herc six times in the VN without using UBW.

To be fair, that's not the impression Archer is giving when he's talking to Ilya in this prologue. He talks like he had a legit chance of beating Berserker. And Ilya agrees, which gives the impression that yes, Archer could have won. So sayeth the plot/narrator.
