Yup, it was. For all that she is (or was) one of the chillest characters in the show, her shippers in both flavors are single-handedly the worst cancer I've had the displeasure of dealing with in the past 3 years running. Bronies at their most virulent had nothing on this.

At least in Facebook people have the relative restraint of being forced to post through an account they associate with themselves, if they haven't been directly forced to use their real name. I don't even want to imagine how cancerous the same people would be unleashed elsewhere.

You're right, I can't imagine why people who are possibly LGBTQ+ would care about a character also being LGBTQ+.
I also think that if your problem is with the shitflinging, maybe your annoyance would be better served being pointed at either the shitflinging itself or the actual root cause - shipping -, instead of at something being used as a LGBTQ+ symbol (among other things) since, what, the eighties?
