What exactly is going with the Facebook pages that post a neverending stream of inanity like "I bet you can't think of a country with no R in its name" and memes and stuff with no apparent theme from one post to the next? I mean, I know someone is making use of all the likes and comments, and I presume it involves advertising, but how does it actually work?
O walls, you have held up so much tedious graffiti that I am amazed you have not already collapsed in ruin.
Essentially, it's all a very coy way of data collection. Information in the current age is not only metaphorically valuable, it is monetarily as well, and has many uses, advertising being a big one, though there are others, such as: security agencies predicting the potential of certain popular movements such as QAnon, Antifa, and so forth; measuring the efficacy and potential of political and electorial lobbying; measuring the efficacy and potential of ideological propaganda (China comes to mind); same can be done for brands, though that can and does overlap with advertising; another metric for the bottom line of several products; pretty much anything that interacts with the masses will find a *very* good use for such data, and that is why so many people are so eager to collect it, or to make quizzes and personality tests and whatever the fuck else, because the results are highly valuable. Cambridge Analytica was not the first, neither the only one, just the scapegoat.
