Hmm... I had a Bond craze for a while when I was a kid. I used to play the From Russia with Love video game a lot.
Movie wise, I remember liking Diamonds are Forever and Goldeneye a lot, but I haven't watched them for over a decade now.
For more recent movies, and by that I mean the Daniel Craig era, I share the same basic opinion as most everyone else: Casino Royale and Skyfall are bangers. I particularly like the latter, and it was the last Bond movie I got to watch with my dad, who was the one that got me into the Bond craze all those years ago.
Well, shit

Judi Dench's M was easily the most dynamic and driven of M's, and she did a bang up job acting as someone doing an unpleasant job but making the best of it, imo. Previous M's (when they even showed up) were little more than exposition devices afair.

Sophie Marceau probably takes my vote for best Bond girl, but it's close.

shit BL says
Once and always and nevermore.
That's interesting. The problem, as I see it, is that she's constantly being undermined by her subordinate who actually knows better than her because he's the protagonist, so it makes her look weak. Or it'll be like in TWINE where she's kidnapped, manages to set up that signal presumably so her people can find her, except it doesn't matter because Bond is taken to that exact location and he manages to free her while he's there - her ingenuity is inconsequential. Maybe she's better in the Craig era.
My problem with Sophie Marceau is that I have an irrational aversion to white women with bangs. Also the scene where she's rubbing ice cubes over her clothed body and acting like it's sexy is insane. It pulled me out of the movie and made me think about all the strange indignities actors are put through, lol
Ugh, I made the mistake of eating some Brazilian grapes last night and now I feel like absolute death.![]()

Iunno, all it says on the packaging is "Vitória Brazil" and they're grapes so I called them Brazilian grapes.![]()

Some places do call Jabuticabas Brazilian grapes, but vitória is an actual type of grape I think, so it's probably not.
Completely unrelated to the above but serendipitously I underwent a Journey to the East to witness the annual Carnival take place and I noticed that one of the parade floats was samba themed, showing off iconic parts of Brazil like Rio...and Mexico.
I nearly bust a gut laughing thinking about Nasu and this forum.![]()

Why is there something so ick-inducing about a bunch of Dunning–Kruger enthusiasts in their thirties/forties popping off on how they're totally super rational people who Fucking Love Science but there's soooooooooo much science doesn't understand and that's why [dumbest woo-woo shit you've ever heard in your life] is totally possible
I feel repulsed enough that I'm having a sudden phase of 'you know what, I never want to believe in anything remotely spooky ever again'. But I can't quite figure out why this, specifically, is so off-putting. People believing [dumbest woo-woo shit you've ever heard in your life] isn't exactly a novelty. Why is this type of Believer so off-putting?
I guess what bothers you is the fact that they're 'using' science to discredit science?
When you put it that way, it seems obvious, and I feel silly for not figuring it out

Battle doesn't need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don't ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don't ask why I fight.
In the late Victoria era, the big popular science-adjacent phenomenon was psychical research. Serious intellectuals well into the mid-20th century were hardcore believers in ESP and stuff. They held that it was totally possible and empirically provable - but just that science couldn't measure and prove it quite yet. I think the essence of it is a failure of humility, a limited skepticism that accepts scientific ideas until they conflict with their preconceived notions. So, instead of changing their theory to fit the facts, they twist the facts until their theory can seem like it's equally valid. At some point this becomes the kind of total quackery that you've seen lots of.
And sometimes the quackery gets legitimised, and you're living in 2023 and your university healthcare covers chiropracty.

If only.
Yes, this hits the nail on the head. It becomes extra annoying when people take the time to explain "actually, science does have a pretty good idea of what's going on with [x]" to people going "science doesn't understand [x]" and then their response is to swerve into "but science doesn't understand [y] from an unrelated field! quantum mechanics!"
It was funny learning about how certain ancient philosophers encrypted their ideas so that laymen couldn't easily access them - for a variety of reasons, but the one that tickled me was "people will do dumb things with this information if they haven't been appropriately prepped to receive it".
"you're going to be annoying about this" as the universal constant
There's something else that's bothering me but it's hard to put into words. It's very... idk, DIY woo-woo with no discipline or ethos behind it. There's no guiding principle, it's pure pick and choose. A feels-based highly individualised experience. Something about its very nature makes it impossible to respect.
