Don't sweat it too much. It's not unusual for cats to never hit it off if they are introduced years apart, but they adapt and will be able to coexist.

What's more annoying is that my mum has totally the wrong idea. She thinks we should keep our old cat in a room whereas let the kitten roam freely which is totally wrong.

yeah my cat was at my doggie's throat when he was a puppy and they're gay lovers now
I'm not even that worried about their relationship it's just that earlier older cat wasn't eating out of her bowl because I think my mum fed the kitten some wet food in that bowl. Basically we had a dry food bowl and a wet food bowl and instead of buying new bowls for each of the cats we didn't think it thru and brought the dry food bowl downstairs for kitten.
