But isn't that the opposite, then? For example, Servants in the Fate-verse do have wills of their own, but a necromancer's Dead Thralls don't. Of course, there are also the mortal Thralls used by vampires, but those don't really count as the undead familiars used by mages, like Fate Servants or Elder Scrolls Dead Thralls.

The difference is pretty much whether one can turn on you. Thralls can't, they are enslaved. Servants aren't. You'd need someone who was compelled beyond ability to resist, and CSs don't seem to be able to compel people like Saber or Gil easily. I still remember Kerry had to use all he had left to force Saber to comply and even Excalibur responded before she did. That really sent the message home: your semi-sentient weapon actually knows who's supposed to be calling the shots.
