I find it hilarious when people say that if you idolize [insert "scoundrel" character here], you aren't watching or reading the material "right". Media is all about interpretation. While many consider Stephen King stories to be horror, I see them as fetish buffets.

Anyway, I'm going to make a rare gesture and indicate that I agree with LLL on this one, primarily because anyone who thinks there's a "right" and "wrong" interpretation of fiction is a pretentious dumbarse.

When you get down to subtexts you're right. But you can't really argue that Lord Voldemort is a misunderstood hero. You can argue for how he represents all different sorts of violent and systemic oppression, but not that what he's doing is in any way justified.


I know that argument is jumping right to Wizard Hitler, but I've seen way too many fanfictions which try to paint the Death Eaters as noble crusaders protecting their traditions. Better written characters get much more leeway, especially when the character is at least trying trying to be a hero.

Well, now you're jumping into individual characters. However, in terms of Harry Potter's story as a whole, the story tries to portray Muggles as the "weak" to be "protected" from the "scary wizard supremacists". However, as Fate fans, we see that the most effective way to deal with wizards is using non-mage methods... Or at the very least, "hybrid build" methods. For example, Kiritsugu has enchanted weapons, but those are far and few in between. Most of his gear is non-enchanted, and all of his gear, enchanted or not, are Muggle weapons (guns and bombs vs. the mage weapons of wands and staves). Also, if you like interpretations of movies and the like that turn the "conventional" view on its fucking head, at least for Star Wars, I suggest watching Generation Tech's videos: https://www.youtube.com/c/GenerationTechOfficial/videos

Furthermore, I disagree with Mages bending over backwards to make Muggles feel safe. The Mages Guild of the Elder Scrolls series decided to ban the "problematic" practice of necromancy because it triggered the stupid Muggles. 200 years later, the Mages Guild ended up essentially disbanded. Sure, a bunch of Guild Mages died in the process, but if they were pro-ban, they got what was coming to them, like people who want to ban things IRL that they find "problematic". So while Voldemort sucks, Mannimarco is fucking awesome.
