Solution, get a better dentist.
Do they give you anesthetic? The dental hygienists at the office I go to have put some kind of topical gel on my gum line since my gums receded. It tastes horrible, but it works great, insofar as it leaves my mouth so numb that no amount of scraping bothers me.

Urgh, this... I still remember the awful taste of cheap ass used car leather in my mouth, but no pain whatsoever.

Today at work I found a fish under the hood of a customers car. Not a small one either. 8-10 inches maybe? Not even at the bottom, like it may have swam up there while launching a boat (which I've seen before). Nope, right at the top, as close to the windshield as it could get while still being concealed. A real tight space too. And it had been there long enough that it had baked enough that it remained rigid when I threw it out. Kept at a right angle even when I was holding it by the tail.
The customers first question to me was if the fish could have gotten there naturally.

Really common too. Most of the time mice and squirrels who like to sleep near the warm engines in the winter months. You don't get much of the dismemberment now though, since engines have gotten so compact you've really got to work to get caught in a belt/fan. Nowadays they just end up baked to the engine.
