It is a pretty terrible adage. People being people, we're much more often blind to where we're crap than where we're good. To limit yourself to just being complimentary is to actively refuse to help people fix their bad spots. You can hurt their feelings for a bit or you can let them hurt themselves until someone braver speaks up, or they themselves screw up so badly they have to recognise it. And that's not going to be pleasant for them either.
Anyway, take it as it's said. He reckons his criticisms are valid whether Spy was joking or not; he stands by them. No need to put more into it.

Spy (playfully, from what I can see) boasted about their mass banners, and people like Koto-nee playfully nudged back with a cheeky remark about that book, and Spy good-naturedly took and it was all fun and silliness till

Now… you know, that adage still holds true and valid. Why? Because constructive criticism is nice. It shows you care about that person enough to help them out. Insulting someone isn’t helpful, isn’t nice, and just shows how much of a dick the speaker is.
Except that Kyte actually gave examples of why he thought Spy's banners had a high attrition rate. He didn't mince his words, whether because he didn't have the patience or didn't think he'd get through by being more polite, but he wasn't just being insulting.
And after enough mentions - and Spy didn't just leave it at the one - you get the feeling there is some soreness behind it, however couched in joking terms they might be. Particularly when there among them are those which sound perfectly serious, like this: Of course not, but considering I made over a hundred Banners, I was kinda hoping for a bit more than eleven.

He wasn’t just being insulting? If he was trying to give constructive criticism, does he just have no social skills or forgot what was constructive about it? Why did he feel the need to stick his oar in when the others had covered the matter already?

What happens when you have like… oh, 1 point.Spy honestly half your banners were boring, badly laid out or just plain uninspired. Take a pic, crop pic, slap text on. That was it.
It's easy to shovel out dozens of banners that way.
Grow up and take this as a sign that you aren't god's gift to photoshoppers and you need to put some actual effort into things.
Spy, I’m afraid to say I was rather discouraged from selecting too many of the banners you made. Compared to some of the other creations, I felt that they didn’t have the creativity necessary to warrant my vote. Perhaps if you were more creative with the manner in which you created them, and put a little more time in, you could gain more votes. After all, as the others have already expressed, quality definitely wins over quantity.
I’m not going to mention anything about god’s gifts or photoshopping, because that would be just silly and kind of rude at this point.

Good god that's awful get me away from it. Oh, and it's not like I need to bother being polite in a forum, I don't even like Spy to begin with. :V
That said, Spy's technical skills are good, it's just that most of his banners plain exude laziness in their creation and that had me annoyed for the entirety of the banner process 'cause I feared volume might end up pushing out infinitely higher-quality banners (insert Kotonoha-fanboying here).
Also my criticism is plenty constructive! It says exactly what's wrong with them. Constructive criticism is not about being nice, it's about clearly identifying the issues that surround the work.

Sounds fair, since most people would have voted before your stuff was added, and not been made aware when it was added.
It was posted here, and even the global announcement changed. Though if we do want a halfway even number, I guess we can add 2 to get to 75? OCD everywhere satisfied.

Why is the number being limited to 70 anyway? All the randomizers I know of generally support over 100...
I liked the Saber one, but it fell out somewhere in the transition from my ~25 shortlist to my final 10.
Because I needed to pick a number somewhere and 70 sounded like nice variety. I am all for calling it 74 so the voting cutoff works properly instead of dropping 4 for no reason.
You're the boss, just kinda seemed wasteful to me.
Unless you plan holding more of these in the future to add or replace banners?
