I believe that necros of oneshots are fine, beneficial even. They spread it to a new audience without betraying anybody's expectations. Ongoing stories are less acceptable because most of the time all it will mean is that many people get their hopes of an update raised, then dashed ruthlessly.

It does pretty much every time, at least the "glad you liked it" part. And no respect is a strange point, considering that the whole point of posting "this was good" is to show respect to the author, lol.

That sounds like you don't even mind it that much, why get worked up about it then? As long as even one person checks out a bumped story, it's a net win.

I am fine with necros. This forum moves so fast that pretty much everything gets buried again instantly anyway. It won't be on the first page for very long.

Admittedly, the only time I can think of someone necroing one of my stories was something that was already done, and I think it was even gwon that pointed out people might jump down their throats for it.

Why aren't we defining our terms? We should define our terms. When is it a necro and not just a delayed response and when is it a delayed response and not a timely one?

Necro = thread is on page 6 and beyond? Dunno. For me a necro is a necro once the first rage-filled OMG Y U NECRO response shows up.

Well the time needed for a thread to be able to be necroed depends on the type of thread, discussion threads cant really be necroed because of their nature (some might disagree). But story threads can be. To get set definitions we would have to come up with different ones for each type of thread, and that's a pain in the ass.

Why this is even a debate is beyond me. Necros are barely annoying (unless they have absolutely nothing to do with the topic bumped) and I'd rather have necros than 50 topics about the same, single thing.

But as a lawyer, I prefer to get paid when I indulge in hypocrisy, thank you, so I'll stick with necromancy. I can see why doing it for ongoing fics might be annoying--if I see an old thread of an ongoing thread crop up, the first assumption is "Hey, XXX finally posted a new chapter!"

Mind you, people who necro a thread for an ongoing fic to ask, "Hey, author, when are you going to post the next chapter?" should be fed to Zouken.

Is Necroing really a big deal? Because I am extremely apathetic towards that.

Well, that's sort of the thing, isn't it? I get worked up about someone being a twit, and I think I'm pretty justified in that. That they showed it by means of a necro is somewhat by-the-by.

On-topic is fine, but that doesn't give it that much intrinsic worth, compared to the likelihood that a necro-post is very likely to be a repeat of what's said before or just not that good. Something that could have been said by clicking a +1 'like' button, and I prefer not to have posts made which could have been replaced by clicking a +1 like button.

If the point is that the poster just liked it there is no need to light a candle on the grave of the previous discussion or whatever paying respect to a discussion is supposed to look like.

While being annoyed at people being stupid is all cool, this is a forumwide decision and thus should require a bit more objecitivity. If you'd leave because people are stupid you would have done so a while ago, it's not like we are lacking that

Here's the thing though, as by my other points (some of which apply considering the responses we got from Kieran and Dezo) the act of necroing in itself is beneficial, as long as the necroing doesn't completely push the new threads out of the way. A healthy mix of 50/50 old goodies and new stuff on the front page wouldn't be bad at all.

That isn't to say that I condone +1 posts, but a necro post doesn't have to be a +1 anyway. It's just that a +1 for an old thread is way more beneficial than the tons of +1s we get in active threads.

If it is an ongoing story, necromancy can die. (Or re-die...or un-die...or something.)

If it is a finished story/oneshot, I could care less.
