Thread: American Elections 2012 - Discussion

  1. #2961
The less populous places get less electors anyway though. The electoral college and similar systems just result in most people effectively being disenfranchised. If you live in an area where your candidate can't win your vote is literally worth nothing.

This is a really bad argument for making it a nation-wide system though, since the chance that your vote personally would matter in a nationwide election is just as low as it is in the current, functionally.

Nah, it would increase marginally, since a vote is still a vote.

Whereas the current system, if you're in a state that's safe red or blue and you're the opposite color, your vote pretty much do not even count.

There are 2,871,238 estimated to be in Kanas. There are 8,175,133 people estimated in New york city alone. If it was all about votes, which would you campaign in?
Both, because you can't win with just New York.

A change to the Popular Vote would essentially turn the election into an actual nationwide contest. Certainly the more populous regions will be focused on, but is that any worse than just a handful of swing states getting attention as is right now?

The "Tyranny of the majority" must be avoided, and this system avoids that by putting caps on each state's voting power.
I find this particular line of argument entirely unpersuasive, since after all the 'Tyranny of the majority' still reign, except in this case it's on a state level instead of a national level.

So not only are the votes of the minority of each state essentially invalidated (they do not matter), the result may not even be democratic because you can lose the popular vote and yet still win the election.

The Electoral College is like the worst of both worlds.

Hot damn Florida is running a tight race once again. ~61% of ballots are in and it's giving Obama the edge so far.
What is man? A miserable little pile of secrets. But enough talk... Have at you!

I posted a link or two in the other thread. One thing is certain now, Ohio is for the Democrats now.

I am pretty sure. Even in Fox News they seem really depressed and feel like Romney are going to lose. Watch as Romney wins and I look like a fool.

Some of us will feel like fools if that happens.
