Yaknow, I've recently been mulling over the question of what might have happened if somehow Edelgard and her siblings had been rescued from the dungeons of Enbarr before the Agarthans were able to manufacture their Flame Emperor? What could they have done instead, since having a Hresvelg heir as their puppet was useful for both sadistic and practical purposes? Having one of Wilhelm's descendants leading a crusade against them was guaranteed to hurt the Nabateans emotionally, or at least Rhea, and practically, having an imperial heir as their puppet gave them easy access to vast military resources in a way just having a regency could not. Could they have chosen to focus more on destabilizing the Kingdom and kidnapped Dimitri to become their pawn just like his ancestor Loog was? Could they have abandoned that plan altogether and instead killed and replaced the ailing Emperor Ionius? Maybe they would do more with the Alliance than they did in canon. Either way, there are so many possible outcomes just from this one change. What do you all think?
Finally beat Silver Snow on Maddening with NG+, and I must say, that map was a doozy, and the Immaculate One was certainly quite the boss. That being said, after some initial scares, I managed to get the hang of the flow of the map, cutting off White Beast reinforcements early, and then essentially letting the enemies come to me at strategic points, luring them all to the left bar a few.
It was very long, tedious, and had a few close shaves, BUT I ultimately got rid of all the enemies save the 2 golems at the top of the map.
As for our rampaging dragon, I took a very methodical approach of having Petra shoot at her with the middle ballista twice, thus breaking part of her barrier, and then I had my Ingrid, Sylvain, and Byleth chip away at her health bars bit by bit, dodging her staggering blow in the process. Once we got to the last health bar, I had everyone launch their gambits in quick succession at her to break her barrier, and then, I whittled her down until a Sublime Heaven could take her out.
After this, I'm planning a final VW, no NG+, Maddening run, and then I'll be done with this amazing game at last.
Conquest Lunatic is actually very decent on Citra with savestates
but god fucking damn it the systems of this game are so retarded

Finally started a VW, no NG+, Maddening playthrough this week, and by the gods, it is fun to play without NG+, but also definitely intimidating, since it is now so much harder to train people, I have less faculty points, and recruitment is actually something I'll have to approach strategically, especially if I want to get everyone.
I really love playing as the Golden Deer again, especially since the preponderance of archers has made the first few maps less difficult than they could be.
Before the War of the Eagle and Lion, the Agarthans always backed the "king of the north", whether it be Nemesis or Loog, while the Church backed the Empire. The Church legitimizing the Kingdom at the end of that war caused some hot, hot role reversal.
Personally, I always thought Nemesis was more of an Eastern king than a Northern one. Also, the War of the Eagle and Lion is interesting because I think there are real questions about what exactly Pan was doing if Rhea was able to negotiate Loog and co. into the Church fold and away from the Agarthans. Did he experience a change of heart and become truly loyal to Loog and Kyphon when originally he had been an Agarthan plant? Did he avoid any exploits and fame of his own out of guilt for his original role? Was it he who locked away the Lost Crest Stones in the Fhirdiad Palace Vault?
Wait, where was Nemesis's headquarters? Geographically, I mean. In other words, I meant that the "king" was generally coming from the north, while the "emperor" was generally coming from the south. As for Pan's views on said role reversal, didn't he basically disappear after the war? He could have quit or was fired or rather the military equivalent of an honorable and dishonorable discharge.
I actually don't know where his headquarters were, but I always hc'd them as being in modern-day Alliance territory, probably somewhere like Gloucester. That being said, since the final battle against Nemesis was on the Tailtean Plains, there's a real chance his headquarters were in Northern Fodlan.
Also, Pan absolutely disappeared from the record after the war, but he is still known as the "Undesiring Strategist" for not having been concerned with self-aggrandizement. It's likely he was still around at the time of negotiations, which technically occured at the end of the war and ended the war, and there's no mention of him leaving King Loog's service.
I think you're confusing where Nemesis lived to where Nemesis's de facto tomb is. He was "interred" in Shambhala, but there's no reason to believe that that was where he led his living army. Pan could have left when he realized that Loog was a bit too eager to listen to Rhea, rather than himself.
That wasn't really why I thought Nemesis was based in Eastern Fódlan, but yeah, it's ultimately a matter of conjecture.
As for Pan, while you may be right about what he did, the manner in which he faded into obscurity makes that less likely. All descriptions of the Undesiring Startegist simply claim that all mentions of him really only talk about his service to Log because he was uninterested in building a legacy. If he left the King's service at some point, I think that would have been mentioned, but it wasn't. So I think it's more likely that Pan stayed on past the war but as a loyal friend and retainer as opposed to a plant.
Nicked Three Houses while it was on sale. Was concerned about which house to pick, first I thought I'd go for Black Eagles because Edelgard, then I was thinking Blue Lions because all the girls are cute and they have the least amount of objectionable characters, then finally I saw Lysithea aaaaaand I'm on a Golden Deer run first, it seems.
shit BL says
Once and always and nevermore.
Golden Deer: Unique cast and coolest lord
Blue Lions: Best story and strongest characters
Black Eagles & [Redacted]: Strongest emotional investment and makes you think. Also Edelgard

Whichever house you pick, be ready to cry... unless you're the type to just recruit every recruitable student to your house, but I don't recommend doing that for the first playthrough. Gotta take in the angst raw (though I would say GD is a bit lighter on the angst compared to the other routes).

It is. Also, it's best you hold off recruiting everyone until you get a good handle on the game's activity point mechanics. Still, there are a few must-recruits, IMO. Always recruit Lorenz ASAP, and I'd say the same for Lysithea. Doing so will make your life easier, especially in Maddening.

Good choice. They also have Marianne and Hilda, two of the best girls and among the best units in the game. GD is great for a first run. Take it from me.

I agree that Redacted gives you a strong investment, but CF caused me to burn out over how unnecessary some of it was.
VW was best story IMO, especially since you uncover the most mysteries.
