Awakening had "localizations" that people didn't like, but (from what I recall) outside of like... one of Henry's supports, they were MOSTLY the same and got the same point across. Fates apparently (again, been a while since I read into it) changed a lot because why not.

I've started to read through all the support conversations in FE7 using a 100% save, and man do I understand the flak the 3ds games get now. They're all pretty solid (save for a few dumb ones), and actually do worldbuilding and reveal facets of characters that you don't usually see. Whereas the majority of 3ds ones are just about the character's sole defining quirk and that's about it (again, save for a few good ones). It actually kind of irritates me how mediocre the ones in awakening/fates are.

Lyn ditched Mark for other men (never have pair ending), Hector was an ass until mid-game and almost everyone else seems to ignore Mark. Eliwood was the only one caring and asking how he is up and all the way till the end, so that's how the meme is born.

I like him being largely irrelevant, especially because he's optional yet if you choose to have an Avatar you still get some sense of involvement.

Uh what? Having an avatar is not optional. Nor does it really create involvement, outside of Lyn's story you are nearly never referenced, never mind spoken to.

IIRC, you don't create Mark unless you start on Lyn's story.

Creating a tactician is optional, after your first playthrough, so you can experience the story without the tactician whenever you start a new game if you so please as long as you're willing to skip Lyn mode.

I don't really self-insert so I'm probably not the best person to comment on the sense of involvement, but I felt that Mark had enough of a presence for me. I never felt like he was completely forgotten, but at the same time he didn't have an overbearing presence in the story like Kris (Who I later found out steals some dialogue from characters.), Robin who's the "true" focal character (Pretty much everything is related to Robin in some way barring the second arc.) or Corrin who's... The main character. Anyways I thought it was fine.

Edit: Oh and I think not having Mark means no Afa's Drops so that's another downside to not getting the affinity boost etc. Personally I always use Mark, but just leave him as is. At most I sometimes change his affinity.

I've seen the translation of the Japanese support. Say what you will about the localisations but you can't deny that Soleil was treated far better in the western release compared to the Japanese version.
