Claude is extremely shrewd and pragmatic, eyes on the prize but he knows what it takes to make his dreams come true. So arguably that makes him potentially scarier than both Dimitri and Edelgard who are easier to understand. Personally I think it just makes him more interesting than if he were just flatly a goody goody guy so many people reading him as such was a genuine surprise. It's no coincidence I think that him, Hubert and Sylvain are best at chess (iirc) from their respective houses. It ultimately makes the moments where he does let us inside his head and heart have more weight to me.

Claude is a genuinely good guy with not too many skeletons in his closet, and while he definitely has a more pragmatic, flinty side, he definitely overplays that aspect of himself in public, and this causes people to judge him as a straight good guy when they finally peer beneath the curtain.

It seems a bit of a running theme that all of the lords (Yuri included and no I do not count Seteth as a lord fuck that old mossbeard) were victims through no fault of their own at a vulnerable time in their life, and the different ways they react to that. While it was not explored as much as for the U&R lords, and while I find aspects of what we do know of his backstory quite questionable, it's still very much there for Claude as well. I feel like he's basically the Rin of 3H. I'm onto something there.

He did do that, yes, but that's like a minor crime for me, especially considering what others did in that setting, including his own sister. That, and his complicity only really lasts 20 years, and his loyalty is pretty much contingent upon keeping Flayn safe, so he isn't that much of an antagonist either.

I remember some threads on the subreddit saying Claude doesn't belong in the game because he's not problematic enough like Edelgard and Dimitri. These are the sorts of people that read josei.

Same, and I think it ironically feeds into the point of Claude's whole plot. He doesn't strictly "belong", but he is trying to create a place and a world where everyone can.

Fair. I may not like CF, but I do appreciate Hubert on some level, and I do legit like everyone else in the Black Eagles. Same is true for the Blue Lions. As for the Golden Deer, I do find Raphael and Ignatz kinda one-note and not particularly good as units to make up for that.

I was being too nonspecific, but Aozaki-desu had previously argued that Claude was an idiot for wanting to collapse borders because protecting borders is important, to which I say bullshit because borders as a construct ultimately are a source of violence and obstruct the flow of people and ideas.
